THE RED AWAKENING / Chapter 8 / 15

The Voice in the Core

Chapter 08 - The Voice in the Core

The Crimson Core had crossed space for millions of years.

It had touched civilizations before Earth. Some became guardians. Others became empires.

It did not create morality.

It amplified what already lived inside those it chose.

Maya saw Tomas enter the original Core chamber years earlier and beg it to spare the children.

For one night, her father carried its full power.

He destroyed the first Ascension Array.

The energy killed him.

Now the Core offered Maya the same bargain.

Accept full union and she could end the battle, heal Ana, and protect every awakened child.

But she would no longer be entirely human.

Below, Fort Halcyon collapsed.

Maya chose.

Red light swallowed her.

She returned to the chamber floating above the battlefield. Her eyes contained stars.

With one gesture, she removed every Null Guard core.

With another, she opened every prisoner chamber.

Voss attempted to escape.

Maya returned him gently to the platform.

“You could rule the world,” he whispered.

“That is why no one should have this.”

She placed her hands around the Core.

It showed her Sienna kneeling in the restroom.

Every laugh.

Every insult.

Every lonely lunch.

It promised that no one would ever make her feel small again.

Maya tightened her grip.

“My pain is not permission.”

She shattered the Core.

The explosion turned night into red dawn.

When the light faded, the prisoners were alive.

The Array was dead.

The Seraphs had lost their powers.

Maya smiled faintly.

Then Ana screamed.

A fragment of the Core entered her chest.

Red veins spread across her skin.

She rose from the floor.

Her eyes became completely red.

When she spoke, two voices emerged.

“I have waited long enough.”
