The Last Flight of Atlas

Chapter 11 - The Last Flight of Atlas
Maya caught Atlas before he struck the ground.
Golden light leaked from wounds across his body.
“You came back,” she whispered.
“I was tired of being someone’s weapon.”
Lena tried to heal him.
Her power failed.
“The Core is linked to your mother through memory,” Atlas said. “You cannot overpower it.”
“How do I separate them?”
“Give it a memory stronger than her pain.”
He died before he could explain.
Maya carried him to the rooftop.
Subject One had spent his life believing strength meant survival.
In the end, he used it to protect someone else.
Maya understood.
She could not defeat Ana with force.
She flew directly into her mother’s chest.
The world disappeared.
She landed inside Ana’s memories.
A young woman strapped to a laboratory table.
Needles.
Machines.
Ana holding baby Maya.
Tomas promising to return.
Helix taking the child.
Seventeen years of darkness.
Maya nearly drowned in it.
Then she made a memory that had never happened.
A kitchen filled with sunlight.
Ana laughing at a table.
Elena cooking too much food.
Gabriel repairing a chair.
Eve learning to dance badly.
A future that was ordinary and free.
Ana appeared.
“That never happened.”
“No.”
“Then it is a lie.”
“It is a choice.”
Maya reached for her.
“You taught me that anger is energy, not destiny.”
Ana began to cry.
“I could not protect you.”
“You survived long enough to warn me.”
The red armor cracked.
The Core emerged between them as a burning eye.
SHE BELONGS TO ME.
Maya took her mother’s hand.
“No one belongs to anyone.”
Together, they shattered it.
Above the city, the storm collapsed.
Maya and Ana fell from the sky.
Hundreds of newly awakened people raised their hands.
Blue light.
Green light.
Silver wind.
Together, they caught mother and daughter above the street.

No single hero saved them.
A city did.
