The Girl Behind the Symbol

Chapter 13 - The Girl Behind the Symbol
The internet named her Red Seven.
Maya hated the name.
Children loved it.
Videos showed her holding a bridge long enough for families to escape and carrying firefighters through smoke.
The world wanted a symbol.
Maya wanted boundaries.
At school, some feared her.
Others followed her with cameras.
Only Priya treated her normally.
“You still owe me twelve dollars,” Priya said at lunch.
“I saved the city.”
“You borrowed the money before that.”
Across the cafeteria, a boy whispered “monster.”
Maya heard him.
Her eyes almost changed.
Power had not removed humiliation.
It had only changed the consequences of reacting.
Sienna sat alone.
Maya walked over.
“Why did you choose me before your father ordered you to?” Maya asked.
Sienna stared at the table.
“Because everyone liked you before you became quiet. I was jealous. Then hurting you became easy.”
“That does not excuse it.”
“I know.”
“Thank you for telling the truth.”
Their relationship did not become friendship.
But hatred loosened.
That afternoon, every emergency screen activated.
Director Voss appeared inside an underground chamber surrounded by black crystals.
“The Crimson Core was not the only object recovered from space.”
Something moved behind him.
“Helix called this one the Void.”
A wave passed through the city.
Maya’s powers disappeared.
Every enhanced person collapsed.
The sky turned black at noon.
A creature stepped behind Voss.
It had no face, only a body filled with extinguished stars.
Ana called Maya.
Her voice trembled.
“The Crimson Core was not traveling toward Earth.”
“What was it doing?”
“It was running.”

The Void opened its eyes.
It had found what it had been hunting.
