THE RED AWAKENING

Chapter 01 - THE RED AWAKENING

## chapter 01 - The Word on Her Skin

Maya Reyes had learned how to disappear without leaving a room.

She lowered her eyes in hallways, chose the last seat in every class, and walked through Briarwood Academy as if apologizing for taking up space. At sixteen, she had become an expert at surviving the laughter that followed her, the whispered names, and the phones lifted whenever Sienna Vale decided someone’s pain deserved an audience.

That afternoon, Sienna chose the girls’ restroom.

The door slammed behind Maya.

Cold white lights hummed above the long mirror. Three girls in tailored school blazers blocked the exit. Sienna stood in front of them, blond hair tied high, a bright red lipstick turning between her fingers.

“Please,” Maya whispered.

Sienna smiled.

“Now everyone will know what you are.”

She shoved Maya against the tile and wrote across her forehead in slow, deliberate strokes.

L O S E R.

The girls laughed.

Maya stared at herself in the mirror. A tear slid down her cheek, cutting through the red smear near her eyebrow.

She heard her mother’s voice from years ago.

When anger comes, breathe through it. Never let it choose for you.

Maya closed her eyes.

The room went silent.

Not truly silent.

She could hear the buzz inside the fluorescent lights. Water trembling in the pipes. Four heartbeats.

Three fast with excitement.

One slow.

Her own.

Something deep beneath her ribs opened.

Heat rushed through her veins.

When Maya looked up, her eyes glowed red.

Sienna’s smile vanished.

“What the hell—”

Maya moved before the sentence ended.

One second she was against the wall. The next, Sienna struck the floor. Another girl lunged, and Maya caught her wrist without looking. She turned, swept a leg, and sent two bodies crashing against the sinks.

The third bully froze and backed into a stall.

Sienna tried to crawl away.

Maya placed one knee beside her shoulder and picked up the lipstick.

Sienna’s face had lost all color.

Maya held the red tip one inch above her forehead.

“You wrote the wrong name,” she said. “It’s your turn now.”

The lights exploded.

Darkness swallowed the room.

When the emergency lights flickered on, Maya was gone.

But in the long mirror, a red handprint remained glowing on the glass.

Across town, beneath an abandoned military research center, an alarm awakened for the first time in seventeen years.

A man in a gray uniform looked up from a wall of black monitors.

On one screen, a symbol appeared.

A circle split by a burning red line.

May you like

The man smiled.

“Subject Seven is alive.”
