The Forgotten Five

Chapter 05 - The Forgotten Five
The search began with the surviving names.
Subject Two was Lena Ward, a paramedic who could absorb another person’s injuries.
Subject Four was Marcus Flint, imprisoned after becoming dense enough to collapse a bank vault during a panic attack.
Subject Five had been erased from every file.
Lena refused to join them.
“I spent fifteen years learning to live without being someone’s experiment,” she said. “I will not return to their war.”
Marcus was less reluctant.
Gabriel intercepted his prison transfer. Marcus changed his body into smoke-thin mass, slipped through the armored floor, then became dense enough to stop the convoy by standing in the road.
When he saw Maya, he laughed.
“Seven is a kid?”
“She threw an SUV,” Gabriel said.
Marcus stopped laughing.
At the safe house, Evelyn trained Maya to separate emotion from control.
Anger produced force.
Fear accelerated perception.
Grief distorted gravity.
Love, Evelyn believed, could produce something greater.
“Love is not a weapon,” Maya said.
“Neither is fire until someone chooses how to use it.”
Maya shattered walls, bent steel, and once lifted the entire house three inches off its foundation.
But red veins spread across her arms each time she used too much power.
“The Core energy is consuming your cells,” Evelyn warned.
“Then teach me to exceed the limit once.”
That night, Lena arrived carrying a medical bag.
“I treated a twelve-year-old whose eyes turned blue when his father hit him,” she said. “The field is already spreading.”
Helix had begun testing the Array.
Across the country, children were awakening through trauma.
A coded transmission interrupted the news.
Atlas appeared, injured.
“Fort Halcyon moved activation forward. Twelve hours.”
A blade of white energy pierced his chest from behind.
He fell.
A woman in silver armor stepped into view. Her eyes glowed white.
Subject Five.

“My name is Eve,” she said.
Then she crushed the transmitter.
