The Blue Room

Chapter 07 - The Blue Room

They found Lily in the pantry twelve minutes later.

She was curled behind paper towels, shaking.

“I didn’t run,” she whispered. “I didn’t want Mr. Preston to hear.”

Captain Hayes searched the safe house.

The listening device was inside a nightlight shaped like a moon.

Rachel stared at it like it had teeth.

“It came in a victim services bag.”

The delivery log showed one name.

Evelyn Ward.

Even after crying, even after giving a statement, Evelyn had planted one more ear for Preston.

Mason crouched in front of Lily.

“You wrote that you know where the blue files are.”

Lily nodded.

“Mr. Preston has a blue room.”

“What kind of room?”

“At the house with no kitchen.”

She explained that Preston sometimes took her to a small brick building that looked like a house but had desks inside. A room there had gray cabinets full of blue folders.

“I saw Mommy’s picture,” Lily said. “And another lady. And a girl with yellow hair.”

Mason’s heart kicked.

“Yellow hair?”

“Like the lady in your wallet.”

Sarah.

Captain Hayes found the property quickly. Preston owned a brick building on West Marigold Road through an LLC. Officially, it was a consulting office.

By the time police arrived, smoke was coming from the back.

The file room had been set on fire.

Firefighters saved what they could. Charred blue folders. Half-burned photos. Wet legal pages.

Then a firefighter carried out a metal lockbox.

Inside were flash drives, cash, and a list of children.

Lily Lawson.

Noah Mercer.

Chloe Whitcomb.

Mara Jennings.

Eight more.

Beside each name were notes: mother status, asset value, pressure point.

Rachel recognized one name from her parenting evaluation group.

“Chloe lost custody last year,” she whispered. “Everyone said she ran away.”

Dolly looked at the burned folders.

“This wasn’t one bad man,” she said. “This was a business.”

Then Lily called Rachel from the safe house with another memory.

“The blue room had a map,” she said. “One red sticker was on Mercy House.”

Mercy House.

The shelter Sarah had tried to reach before she died.

Dolly’s phone rang.

A woman whispered, “If you found the blue files, tell Mason Cole the shelter is next.”
