Behind the Dryer

Chapter 06 - Behind the Dryer

Captain Hayes told Mason not to move.

Mason wanted to ride until he found Kyle.

Boone stood in front of the door.

Dolly stood beside the phone.

Everyone in that kitchen knew Preston had written Mason’s reaction before Mason had a chance to feel it.

Dangerous biker.

Violent grandfather.

Unstable witness.

So Mason sat down.

Barely.

Hayes traced the call enough to confirm Kyle had taken Noah from Indiana that morning. Kyle’s wife said he called it a father-son trip. She had not known about Preston’s threats.

Then Boone’s nephew managed to power on Sarah’s old phone.

The last voice memo was from the night before she died.

Sarah’s voice filled the kitchen.

“Dad, if I chicken out tomorrow, remind me Noah deserves better than quiet fear.”

Mason bent over the table.

The recording continued.

“Kyle is meeting Preston again. Preston told him to make me look unstable. If I take Noah to Dad’s, they’ll use the club against me.”

Then Sarah whispered something that changed everything.

“If something happens, check the blue folder behind the dryer.”

Sarah’s old rental house had been sold and remodeled, but Captain Hayes got permission from the new owners.

At midnight, Mason stood in a stranger’s laundry room.

Boone pried off a loose piece of baseboard behind the dryer.

A blue plastic folder slid out.

Inside were Sarah’s hidden documents.

Photos. Messages. Shelter notes. A draft custody petition.

And one letter addressed to Mason.

Dolly read it aloud because Mason couldn’t.

Dad,

If you’re reading this, I either got brave or something went wrong.

Please don’t let them say I was crazy.

I was scared.

There is a difference.

Take care of Noah.

And if another woman ever says she needs help, believe her the first time.

Love,

Sarah

Mason closed his eyes.

He had not saved Sarah.

But Sarah had left him a map.

The next morning, Rachel woke in the safe house and screamed.

Lily was gone.

On her pillow was a crayon drawing of a motorcycle, a teddy bear, and a road.

Under it, Lily had written:

I know where Mr. Preston keeps the blue files.
