The Raffle Lady

Chapter 15 - The Raffle Lady
Caroline stood barefoot in the gravel, watching her sanctuary burn.
Firefighters carried out two missing dogs.
The third, Tripod, limped from under a truck as if offended that anyone doubted him.
The original ledger was gone.
Preston’s attorneys called the fire tragic timing.
Ruth called it obstruction.
Dolly called it the dumbest confession a match ever made.
Still, copies were not originals.
And originals mattered.
At Mason’s kitchen table, wrapped in Dolly’s cardigan, Caroline remembered something.
“Daniel said there was a second proof set.”
“Where?” Ruth asked.
“Not with me. Not with Mercy House. Somewhere Preston would never search.”
She looked at Dolly.
“The raffle lady.”
Dolly blinked.
“Me?”
“Daniel said Sarah gave something to a dispatcher at the Mercy Ride. A woman with a laugh like gravel.”
Boone grinned.
“That’s definitely Dolly.”
Dolly went quiet.
“Oh, Lord. I have a box.”
Her house was full of quilts, recipe tins, police plaques, and things she meant to sort later.
In the hall closet, behind Christmas wreaths, sat a plastic tub labeled RALLY LOST & FOUND - OLD.
Inside were sunglasses, gloves, keychains, a child’s sweatshirt, and a waterproof pouch.
Dolly opened it with shaking hands.
Inside was a USB drive, a tiny motorcycle charm, and a letter from Sarah.
Dolly,
If Dad isn’t ready to listen, maybe you will be.
Daniel Vail and I found a pattern. If we’re wrong, throw this away and call me dramatic. If we’re right, keep it safe until someone comes asking about Lily.
Dolly sat down hard.
“I forgot,” she whispered. “Sarah died two weeks later. I thought it was grief talking.”
Mason knelt beside her.
“It got here.”
The USB held Daniel’s audit, the ledger scans, recordings, and a file titled COLE/MERCER - PRESTON LIABILITY.
Sarah and Daniel had built the case.
Dolly had kept the key for nine years.
By evening, federal agents had the drive.
By midnight, Preston requested a plea conversation.
But before anyone could celebrate, the court received an anonymous filing.
An edited video.
