Chapter 16 - The Edited Video
The edited video was dangerous because parts of it were true.
Rachel had yelled.
Lily had cried.
Mason had stood nearby.
But the video cut out why.
It removed Lily being rescued from Margaret’s cabin.
It removed Rachel begging paramedics to check her daughter.
It removed Mason stepping back to keep cameras away.
The lie made Rachel look unstable.
Made Lily look afraid of her.
Made Mason look like muscle.
Preston’s machine was still doing what it was built to do.
Create doubt.
Ruth watched the video three times and then closed the laptop.
“They are running out of doors,” she said.
Dolly walked in from the living room.
“Then stop letting them introduce Rachel as the problem. Introduce the machine.”
So they did.
The next day, the courtroom was packed.
Mothers from Mercy House.
Women from Sarah’s list.
Caroline with a burned wrist.
Amanda Mercer.
Bikers from the rally.
Dolly in a navy blazer that she said made her feel like “a Baptist with evidence.”
Preston appeared by video from detention.
Ruth played the edited video.
Then she played the full body-camera footage.
The courtroom saw the truth.
Rachel yelling because her child had just been rescued.
Lily running to her.
Mason stepping away.
Then Ruth showed the note.
NOT MY MOM. HELP!!
“This case began,” Ruth said, “because a seven-year-old understood what adults kept missing. Paper can be used as a rope. Calm people can be dangerous. And calling a mother unstable does not make her less of a mother.”
Mason testified.
Preston’s attorney asked about his biker club, tattoos, old arrest, grief, and anger.
“Isn’t it true you hate my client?” the attorney asked.
Mason looked at Preston on the screen.
“I hate what he built.”
“So you’re biased.”
Mason leaned toward the microphone.
“My testimony is informed.”
Dolly whispered, “Amen.”
The judge ruled that Lily would remain with Rachel.
No contact from Preston, Margaret, Evelyn, or the Vales.
All prior Vail-connected custody orders would be reviewed.
The edited video would be investigated.
That night, Lily wrote a note on a napkin and handed it to Mason.
We told the truth. They heard us.

For the first time in nine years, he slept without hearing Sarah’s missed call.
