Button the Bear

Chapter 04 - Button the Bear

State police arrived because Dolly called an old friend and refused to hang up until someone listened.

Captain Nora Hayes stepped out of the cruiser with silver hair, sharp eyes, and no patience for wealthy men with folders.

She read Lily’s note.

She saw Rachel’s wrists.

She looked in the van.

Then she told Preston Vail to stay exactly where he was.

Preston tried the smile again.

“Captain, this is a misunderstanding.”

Hayes glanced at the sedatives in the evidence bag.

“Then you misunderstood your way into a felony.”

Inside the van, a trooper found a gray stuffed bear with one loose ear.

Lily gasped.

“Button.”

Rachel went pale.

“Don’t give it to her.”

The trooper turned it over.

The back seam had been opened and resewn.

Inside was a tracker.

Then the bear clicked.

A tiny speaker crackled.

Preston’s recorded voice came through.

“Rachel, if you can hear me, you know this only ends one way.”

Lily screamed and covered her ears.

Mason felt something inside him go cold.

This was not a custody fight.

This was a cage with paperwork.

Rachel finally told the story in the fairground office. She had been married to Preston’s younger half-brother, Daniel. After Daniel died in a boating accident, he left most of his estate in trust for Lily.

Preston became trustee.

First he helped.

Then he controlled.

Then he filed papers calling Rachel unstable.

A private doctor named Emory Vale wrote an evaluation Rachel had never agreed to. A judge granted Preston temporary power. Rachel had come to the rally because Preston promised to discuss the trust in public.

Instead, Evelyn, the woman in peach, took Lily.

A hired driver locked Rachel in the barn.

And the van was meant to take them both away.

Mason stood outside the office, trying to breathe.

Captain Hayes came out holding Evelyn’s phone.

“Mason,” she said. “Preston has messages about you.”

“Me?”

Hayes handed him a screenshot.

If the girl approaches the biker, stop her. Cole is the one problem we didn’t plan for.

Mason stared at his own name.

Preston Vail knew him.

And Mason had no idea why.
