Chapter 09 - The Search
Detective Reyes's team, executing a formal search warrant on the Cade estate's private study and Lauren's personal belongings, uncovered a considerably more detailed picture of the conspiracy's planning, financial records, printed research on trust law and inheritance reversion clauses, and, most damning, a series of deleted text messages recovered from Lauren's phone through digital forensic analysis, exchanges with Victor Lang spanning the six months preceding Oliver's fall.
"These messages establish the timeline conclusively," Reyes told Julian, once the digital forensics team had completed their recovery. "Lauren approached Victor Lang two months before Oliver's riding accident, not after, as we'd initially assumed. She was actively planning this before your son ever fell from that pony."
Julian felt something cold and entirely new settle into his understanding of the conspiracy, a detail that transformed his son's accident from unfortunate coincidence into something considerably more calculated.
"You're suggesting the fall itself wasn't an accident," he said slowly.
"I'm suggesting we need to investigate that possibility formally," Reyes said. "The messages don't explicitly confirm Lauren arranged the fall itself, but the timeline is difficult to interpret as pure coincidence, given how quickly Victor Lang was prepared to act once Oliver actually broke his arm."
The investigation into Oliver's riding accident, reopened given this new evidence, eventually revealed that the estate's riding instructor, a young woman named Bridget Cole who had been employed for less than a year, had allowed Oliver to ride a considerably less experienced pony than his usual mount that specific day, a decision she now admitted, under careful questioning, had come at Lauren's direct suggestion.
"She said the usual pony needed rest," Bridget told Reyes, during her own formal interview. "I didn't think anything of it at the time. She was his stepmother. I had no reason to question her judgment about which animal was appropriate for him that day."
The younger, less experienced pony had a documented history of skittishness around sudden movement, a detail Reyes's team confirmed through the estate's own stable records, records that also showed Lauren had specifically requested that particular pony be saddled that morning, overriding Bridget's initial recommendation.
"This suggests premeditation extending even further back than we'd previously established," Reyes told Julian. "If she engineered the fall itself, specifically to create an opportunity for the cast, this is a considerably more elaborate and sustained conspiracy than a single moment of criminal opportunism."
Julian sat with the full, expanding scope of what his wife had apparently planned, a specific horror settling over him that extended well beyond the capsule itself, backward through months of careful, patient manipulation of circumstances entirely within his own household, orchestrated by someone he'd trusted completely with his son's daily care.

"How do I ever trust my own judgment again," he asked Colette that evening, exhausted by the accumulating weight of discovery. "After missing something this extensive, this sustained, happening in my own home."
"You start," Colette said, "by trusting the instinct that finally made you kneel down beside your son the moment he needed you most. That instinct was always there, Julian. It simply needed the right evidence to finally break through everything else you'd been told to believe."
