The forensic toxicology report arrived three days later, confirming a slow-release compound consistent with a rare heavy metal derivative, delivered through the capsule's mechanical action whenever pressure was applied near the wrist, precisely the kind of pressure that would occur naturally during a child's ordinary movement and, considerably more directly, whenever someone deliberately squeezed or manipulated the cast's surface.
"This is an extremely sophisticated delivery mechanism," the forensic toxicologist explained, during a call with Julian, Dr. Kapoor, and Detective Naomi Reyes, who had been assigned the case the moment the hospital's mandatory reporting requirements triggered a formal police referral. "The capsule itself shows evidence of specialized medical device engineering, well beyond what an ordinary person could construct without considerable technical expertise."
"Who has that kind of expertise," Detective Reyes asked, already anticipating the direction her investigation would need to take.
"Orthopedic technicians, certain medical device engineers, individuals with specific training in prosthetics or implantable delivery systems," the toxicologist said. "I'd recommend investigating who actually applied Oliver's original cast, and whether that individual had any prior relationship with anyone in the household."
Julian, reviewing the hospital's original records from four months earlier, found the name immediately, Victor Lang, the orthopedic technician who had applied Oliver's cast following his fall, a contractor the hospital used regularly, with no obvious connection to the Cade family beyond that single professional interaction.
Detective Reyes's investigation into Victor Lang, conducted over the following week, uncovered a considerably more direct connection than Julian had initially assumed. Financial records showed a payment of forty-three thousand dollars, routed through a shell consulting arrangement, from an account Reyes traced back, after considerable effort, to Lauren's personal finances.
"Victor Lang has a considerable gambling debt," Reyes told Julian, once her investigation had progressed far enough to share preliminary findings. "Nearly sixty thousand dollars, accumulated over the past two years, to a private lender operating outside legal boundaries. We believe your wife identified that vulnerability and used it to secure his cooperation."
"How did she even know Victor Lang," Julian asked. "Before Oliver's accident."
"We're still establishing the full timeline," Reyes said, "but preliminary evidence suggests they may have met at the hospital previously, potentially during a different, unrelated visit, months before your son's fall. I want to be careful about speculating beyond what we can currently confirm, but the payment timeline is difficult to interpret as coincidence."
Julian sat with that revelation, the specific horror of understanding his wife had apparently identified a vulnerable, indebted technician and recruited him, deliberately, to build a device capable of slowly poisoning his own son, considerably colder than anything he'd allowed himself to fully imagine even after the cast itself had been broken open in front of him.
