Julian's Doubt

Chapter 06 - Julian's Doubt

Julian returned home from the hospital eight days after the incident, Oliver stable and recovering, his arm properly reset and cast in a facility Julian had personally vetted this time, the specific vigilance of a father who understood, now, exactly how dangerous his own household had quietly become.

Lauren remained under house arrest pending formal charges, her attorney negotiating the specific terms of her confinement while Detective Reyes's team continued building a case that had grown, over the preceding week, considerably more substantial than the initial capsule discovery alone.

Julian found himself, in the quiet hours after Oliver's return home, replaying every moment of his marriage to Lauren with a specific, unforgiving clarity he hadn't allowed himself before the cast had been broken open in front of his own eyes.

"I keep trying to understand how I didn't see it," he told Colette, sitting together in the estate's kitchen late one evening, Oliver finally asleep upstairs under a nurse's careful, round-the-clock supervision. "Four months of watching my son grow sicker, and somehow I never once suspected the woman comforting him through every symptom."

"She was very good at appearing devoted," Colette said. "I watched her manage that performance myself, day after day. I think that's precisely what made it so effective. Nobody suspects the person who seems most exhausted by their own care."

"Margaret set up that trust specifically to protect Oliver," Julian said slowly, "and I never once imagined it might someday motivate someone to try to kill him rather than simply wait for him to inherit naturally."

"Margaret was always more careful than either of us gave her credit for," Colette said. "I think she understood, even before she died, exactly how vulnerable a wealthy child could become to exactly this kind of danger."

Julian thought of his late wife, three years gone now, the specific foresight she'd shown in structuring Oliver's inheritance so deliberately, protection he'd assumed, at the time, was simply prudent estate planning rather than a genuine anticipation of the exact threat that had nearly materialized.

"I want to understand the trust's terms fully," he told Marcus Ellery, the family's longtime attorney, the following morning. "Every provision, every contingency. I need to know exactly what Lauren stood to gain, and exactly how close she actually came to succeeding."

Ellery reviewed the trust documents carefully, confirming what Victor's confession had already suggested, a specific reversion clause that would have transferred substantial control of Oliver's protected inheritance to Julian directly, and by extension to any spouse with sufficient influence over Julian's own subsequent estate planning, in the event of Oliver's death before reaching legal majority.

"Margaret built in additional safeguards, though," Ellery said, reviewing a later provision. "A secondary trustee, independent of you entirely, with authority to investigate and contest any reversion under suspicious circumstances. She named her own sister for that role, specifically anticipating exactly this kind of scenario."

Julian sat with that discovery, a specific, aching gratitude toward a wife three years gone, who had apparently understood, with a foresight he still struggled to fully comprehend, precisely how much danger her own son might someday face.
