Chapter 09 - Renee Silva
The independent medical evaluation, conducted three weeks after Ethan's first meeting with Renee, confirmed what Dr. Ahn had already documented privately, significant, ongoing neurological recovery, sufficient motor function returning to support supervised standing and, with continued therapy, an increasingly strong prognosis for eventual independent mobility.
The specialist conducting the evaluation, a physician with no prior connection to Ethan's case and no knowledge of the guardianship petition quietly being prepared against him, documented her findings with a clinical thoroughness that Renee described, upon reviewing the report, as "exactly the kind of unimpeachable evidence this case is going to need."
"This alone substantially undermines any guardianship claim based on permanent physical incapacity," Renee told Ethan, during their next meeting. "Combined with a cognitive evaluation confirming your full mental competence, which I've already scheduled for next week, Damon and Vanessa's petition becomes considerably harder to sustain in front of any reasonable judge."
"What about the accident itself," Ethan asked. "The brake tampering."
"I've engaged a forensic automotive examiner," Renee said, "who's confirmed Walter's original mechanic's findings independently. The cut pattern is consistent with deliberate sabotage, not mechanical failure or ordinary wear. Combined with Damon's documented access to the vehicle in the weeks preceding the accident, this gives law enforcement a legitimate basis to open a formal criminal investigation."
Ethan sat with the weight of that confirmation, the specific, cold clarity of understanding, now with forensic certainty, that two people he had trusted, one of them a woman he had once intended to marry, had very likely attempted to kill him for financial gain.
"I want it reported," he said. "Formally. To the police, not just documented for my own civil defense."
"I'd recommend timing that report carefully," Renee said. "The moment law enforcement contacts Damon or Vanessa regarding the accident, they'll understand you're investigating far more than a simple guardianship dispute. I want to make sure your own recovery and competence are fully, formally documented and protected before that happens, so neither of them has any window to accelerate their existing plans out of panic."
"How much longer," Ethan asked.
"Two weeks," Renee said. "Perhaps three. I know that feels like a long time, given what you now understand about the danger you're in. I want to be certain we're moving at exactly the pace this case requires, rather than rushing and leaving any opening for either of them to exploit."
Ethan nodded, understanding the specific discipline the situation required, though every instinct in him wanted the entire truth exposed immediately, Vanessa's cruelty and Damon's calculation both laid bare in front of everyone who had watched, two months earlier, a wheelchair rock backward beneath a stiletto heel and done nothing to help.

He thought of Clara, kneeling on cold marble in front of two hundred witnesses, the only genuine kindness offered to him in six months of careful, deliberate testing.
*Two more weeks,* he thought. *Then everyone finally understands exactly what's been happening in this house.*
