The Brake Line

Chapter 06 - The Brake Line

Walter had kept the wrecked sports car's brake components after the accident, a decision he'd made quietly, without consulting Ethan directly, driven by an instinct he hadn't fully examined until months later when certain conversations he'd overheard began to trouble him considerably.

"I had a private mechanic look at them," Walter told Ethan and Clara, the three of them gathered in the study two days after Ethan's revelation, the household's normal routines carrying on undisturbed elsewhere in the house while this particular conversation unfolded behind a closed door. "I didn't want to raise questions with the insurance investigators until I understood what I was actually looking at myself."

"And," Ethan said.

"The brake line shows a clean cut," Walter said, "not the kind of wear pattern you'd expect from age or mechanical failure. A precise, deliberate incision, positioned exactly where it would produce gradual fluid loss rather than immediate, obvious failure, giving you enough road time to reach that specific curve before losing braking capacity entirely."

Ethan sat with that, the specific, cold clarity of understanding his accident had very likely never been an accident at all finally arriving in full, unavoidable detail.

"Who had access to the car," he asked.

"The garage staff, obviously," Walter said. "Yourself. Vanessa, who kept a spare key on her own ring for convenience. And Damon Cole, who used the vehicle himself on at least two occasions in the weeks before the accident, borrowing it for what he described at the time as a mechanical inspection related to an upcoming charity car show."

Clara, listening carefully from the corner of the room, felt the full shape of what she'd stumbled into finally crystallizing into something considerably more serious than a wealthy man's private grief.

"You think Damon did this," she said. "Or Vanessa. Or both of them together."

"I think," Ethan said slowly, "that the same two people I overheard discussing guardianship terms in considerably too warm a tone had both the access and, apparently, the motive to ensure my incapacity became permanent, rather than leaving my recovery to chance."

"We need to be careful," Walter said. "If they're capable of tampering with a car's brakes to protect their plans, they may be capable of considerably more, once they understand you're not only recovering, but actively investigating what happened to you."

"That's precisely why nobody outside this room can know I've recovered," Ethan said. "Not yet. Not until we understand exactly how deep this goes, and have enough evidence to make sure whatever comes next actually holds up."

He looked at Clara, something steady and grateful in his expression.

"I need someone inside this house I can trust completely," he said, "who can move through these rooms without raising suspicion, the way I currently can't. Someone who can help me and Walter gather what we need before Vanessa and Damon realize we're gathering anything at all."

Clara considered the request seriously, understanding fully now the size of what she was being asked to participate in, a conspiracy investigation layered on top of an elaborate, ongoing deception, both of them potentially dangerous if either Vanessa or Damon discovered what was actually happening beneath their careful assumptions.

"I'll help," she said. "Whatever you need."
