Damon and Vanessa filed the formal guardianship petition exactly as planned, six weeks after the engagement party, entirely unaware that Renee Silva had already prepared a comprehensive defense, or that a parallel criminal investigation into the accident itself had quietly begun the same week.
The petition, once filed, triggered an automatic court hearing date, scheduled three weeks out, a timeline that gave both sides exactly the same window to prepare, though only one side understood the true scope of what was actually about to unfold in that courtroom.
Renee filed Ethan's response the following day, a comprehensive package including the independent medical evaluation confirming his significant physical recovery, a cognitive competence assessment establishing his full mental capacity, and a formal request that the court consider the timing and circumstances of the petition itself as potentially indicative of bad faith on the part of the petitioners.
"This is going to surprise them considerably," Renee told Ethan, reviewing the filing together in her office. "They've built their entire petition around a prognosis that's now nearly four months outdated. I expect their legal team to request an emergency continuance the moment they see this filing, to buy time to reassess their strategy."
"Let them ask," Ethan said. "I want this hearing to happen as scheduled, not delayed while they scramble to build a different case."
"I agree," Renee said. "I'll oppose any continuance request vigorously. Given the strength of our filing, I don't think the court will be inclined to grant one regardless."
The criminal referral regarding the brake tampering proceeded on a separate, parallel track, detectives quietly gathering additional evidence, interviewing garage staff, cross-referencing Damon's documented access to the vehicle against the forensic timeline the automotive examiner had established.
Clara continued her ordinary duties throughout this period, maintaining the careful, unremarkable presence that had allowed her to gather crucial information for the past two months, though the strain of the coming hearing, and the specific danger of Damon and Vanessa realizing the full scope of what was being prepared against them, weighed increasingly heavy as the court date approached.
"I keep waiting for one of them to notice something's changed," she told Ethan, during one of their now-regular evening conversations in the study. "Some small detail that gives away how much we actually know."
"They won't," Ethan said. "Not until the moment we choose to reveal it. Renee's built this carefully, specifically to avoid tipping our hand before the hearing itself."
"And after the hearing," Clara asked. "What happens to this house. To all of us who work here."

"I intend to make sure every member of this staff who's shown genuine loyalty through this entire situation is taken care of," he said, "regardless of how dramatically things change once the truth comes out. That includes you, considerably more than anyone else, though I hope, by then, our relationship will have moved well beyond simple employment."
