Ethan's Guilt

Chapter 12 - Ethan's Guilt

Ethan's guilt, when it finally surfaced fully, arrived not from the deception itself, which he still believed necessary, but from the specific cost that deception had extracted from Clara, a woman who had done nothing to deserve being drawn into a dangerous conspiracy investigation simply because she'd shown him basic kindness at exactly the right moment.

"I need to apologize to you," he told her, one evening in the study, Walter having retired early, the two of them alone with the specific privacy that had become, over the past two months, a comfortable and considerably meaningful routine.

"For what," Clara asked.

"For asking you to risk your own safety," Ethan said, "for a situation that has nothing to do with you, beyond a single moment of decency I happened to witness. If Vanessa or Damon discover what you've been doing, the consequences for you could be considerably more severe than anything they're currently planning for me."

"I made my own choice," Clara said. "You didn't force anything on me. I could have said no, that first evening in your study, and I didn't, because I wanted to help."

"I know," Ethan said. "That doesn't fully resolve my own responsibility for the risk I've asked you to carry."

Clara considered him carefully, the specific directness of a man who had spent the past two months learning, in the most difficult possible circumstances, exactly who around him could be trusted with vulnerability.

"Can I tell you something honestly," she said, "that has nothing to do with the case."

"Please," Ethan said.

"I don't regret any of it," Clara said. "Not the risk, not the late nights, not the specific fear of being caught reporting things I've overheard. I think, somewhere in the past two months, this stopped being purely about helping you survive a conspiracy, and became something I wanted to be part of for reasons that are considerably more personal than professional loyalty."

Ethan felt something in his chest loosen, a specific relief that had nothing to do with legal strategy or forensic evidence.

"I've felt the same thing," he admitted. "For weeks now. I haven't said anything, given the engagement still technically remains intact, and given how inappropriate it would be to burden you with those feelings while you're actively risking your own safety on my behalf."

"You're not burdening me," Clara said. "You're finally saying something I think we've both been carefully avoiding."

They sat together in the quiet study, the specific comfort of finally naming something that had been building steadily beneath every careful conversation of the past two months, though both of them understood, without needing to say it aloud, that acting on it fully would have to wait until the considerably more urgent business of Vanessa and Damon's conspiracy had been fully, formally resolved.

"Two more weeks," Ethan said. "Renee thinks the guardianship defense will be ready to file by then, alongside the criminal referral regarding the brake tampering."

"And then," Clara asked.

"And then," Ethan said, "I intend to stand up, in front of everyone who watched Vanessa humiliate me on that terrace, and show them exactly who I actually am, and exactly who actually mattered to me while they all stood by and did nothing."
