The Footage

Chapter 09 - The Footage
The full footage arrived on a Tuesday morning.
Daniel did not open it alone.
He called Detective Okafor, asked Lena to reserve the interior conference room, and sent Chloe one message: *Come after your appointment. Bring whoever Dr. Reyes requires.*
Dr. Reyes required a driver and a promise that Chloe would leave if contractions began.
Daniel drove.
They entered through the private garage to avoid reporters gathered near the lobby. Someone had identified Daniel as Chloe's brother, and the story had moved from local court news to morning television.
Pregnant teacher falls during courthouse confrontation.
The headline avoided the word *pushed.*
For now.
Chloe wore a loose gray dress and flat boots. The repaired clasp on her locket held, but the cracked glass remained.
In the conference room, a large monitor faced four chairs.
Okafor stood near the screen with a courthouse evidence technician named Bryce. He wore a brown sweater with one elbow patched in a slightly different shade.
"We have four exterior feeds and one interior vestibule feed," Bryce said. "All synchronized to system time."
"Any gaps?" Daniel asked.
"No."
"Audio?"
"Only the vestibule camera. Exterior is video."
Chloe sat.
Her palms were damp, so she pressed them against the fabric over her knees.
Okafor noticed.
"We can stop whenever you need."
"No."
Daniel took the chair beside her.
Bryce dimmed the lights.
Camera One showed the high angle they already knew. Chloe appeared small on the middle landing, Vivian partly blocking the view.
The shove looked like a sudden collision.
Then Chloe vanished downward.
Daniel's hand tightened around his pen.
Camera Two faced the doors from across the plaza.
The image was wider.
Vivian followed Chloe through the revolving door. Ethan came out three seconds later. Chloe descended carefully, one hand on the rail.
Vivian accelerated.
She did not reach to catch Chloe.
She planted both feet, drew her arms back, and struck Chloe squarely between the shoulders and upper chest as Chloe turned.
Both hands.
No hesitation.
The room remained quiet except for the computer fan.
Chloe watched herself lose balance.
Her body folded around Poppy on the third step. Her shoulder hit the fifth. Her head struck the edge of the seventh.
She could not look away.
The locket flashed silver at her throat, then snapped open.
On the screen, the tiny cracked glass caught light as she landed.
Chloe's hand rose to her collarbone.
The real locket was warm beneath her fingers.
Daniel reached for the pause control.
"Don't."
"You don't have to watch the rest."
"I do."
Camera Three showed the lower staircase.
Chloe landed near the railing. Papers slid around her. A woman dropped an umbrella and rushed forward, then stopped when a deputy shouted for space.
Vivian stood at the top.
Ethan stood beside her.
Six seconds passed.
Seven.
Eight.
He did not move.
Vivian covered her mouth. Ethan put one hand on her back.
At twelve seconds, Daniel burst through the courthouse doors.
He crossed the landing before Ethan took his first step downward.
Daniel stopped the video.
His face had gone pale around the mouth.
"Play it again," Chloe said.
"No."
"Daniel."
"We have what we need."
"I need to see where Ethan was looking."
Okafor moved the cursor back.
The footage played at half speed.
At the moment Vivian raised her hands, Ethan's face turned toward Chloe.
He saw the shove.
After Chloe fell, he watched her strike the steps. His body leaned forward as if to run, but Vivian grabbed his sleeve.
He stopped.
Then he put his hand on her back.
Chloe stared at the frozen frame.
Ethan's palm rested between Vivian's shoulder blades.
The same place Vivian had struck Chloe.
"Save that still," Daniel said.
Bryce marked the time code.
Okafor pulled a chair closer.
"Mrs. Bennett, this is enough for me to revise the recommendation."
"To what?"
"Aggravated battery involving a pregnant victim. The charging decision belongs to the state's attorney."
"Will Ethan be charged?"
"Not for failing to move quickly."
"He lied in his statement."
"Potentially obstruction or false reporting, but I need to prove the lie was intentional."
Daniel tapped the screen.
"He was facing them."
"Yes."
"He described the same motion as an attempt to catch her."
"Yes."
"Then prove it."
Okafor met his gaze.
"I intend to."
Chloe looked at the still.
"No."
Both of them turned toward her.
"Don't start with Ethan's lie," she said. "Not yet."
Daniel frowned.
"Why?"
"Because Vivian believes he's protecting her. Ethan believes her case is separate from the divorce."
Okafor folded her arms.
"And?"
"Charge her first."
Daniel understood before the detective did.
"Let them talk."
Chloe nodded.
"If Vivian thinks Ethan is safe, she'll expect him to pay for her defense and keep repeating his version. If he thinks she can take him down, he'll try to separate himself."
Okafor studied Chloe.
"You want pressure between them."
"I want the truth to become more useful than loyalty."
A faint smile touched the detective's mouth.
"I was skeptical when I met you."
"I noticed."
"You were in a hospital bed, and your brother was answering questions I hadn't asked him."
Daniel looked offended.
"I answered one."
"Three."
Chloe almost smiled.
Okafor closed her notebook.
"I'll take the footage to the prosecutor this afternoon."
---
They watched the vestibule camera last.
It had no view of the shove, but its microphone captured the hallway exchange before Chloe chose the stairs.
Vivian's voice came through thin and sharp.
*You're ruining his life.*
Chloe heard herself answer.
*No. I'm ending our marriage.*
Then Ethan.
*Vivian, stop.*
The recording showed him standing close enough to guide Vivian toward the opposite elevator. He did not.
When Chloe said, *I hope that's true. It would make this less pathetic,* Vivian's face tightened.
Ethan responded, *Chloe, you didn't have to say that.*
Bryce paused.
"There's more after they exit."
The camera continued recording the open vestibule.
Seven seconds after Chloe disappeared outside, Ethan said, "Let it go."
Vivian answered, "She needs to understand."
Ethan said nothing.
They followed her out.
Daniel replayed the phrase.
*She needs to understand.*
"Premeditation?" he asked.
Okafor shook her head.
"Not by itself."
"Intent?"
"Useful."
Chloe listened again.
Vivian did not sound hysterical.
She sounded decided.
The rage came later, when Chloe refused to react correctly.
---
At lunch, Daniel brought Chloe a grilled cheese sandwich from the deli downstairs.
They sat in his office with the footage paused on a blank screen.
Chloe picked at the crust.
"I keep thinking I should've held the rail harder."
Daniel set down his coffee.
"No."
"I let go when I turned."
"Stop."
"If I had stayed facing forward..."
"Chloe."
She looked at him.
He did not use a courtroom voice.
"You are not going to revise your body into the cause of her hands."
The sandwich smelled of butter and pepper.
Chloe folded the napkin into smaller and smaller squares.
"I watched Poppy hit every step with me."
"She didn't hit them."
"She felt them."
"Yes."
Chloe's throat tightened.
"I hate that she already has a story before she's born."
Daniel moved his chair closer.
"Then we'll make sure it isn't the only one."
For several minutes, neither spoke.
The city moved beyond the glass. A bus sighed at the curb far below, and sunlight flashed from the river.
Poppy kicked once.
Chloe placed Daniel's hand over the movement.
He froze.
Another kick landed beneath his palm.
"She's rude," Chloe said.
"Strong."
"Both can be true."
His face softened.
That was the quietest part of the day.
It made the next call feel louder.
Okafor phoned at three forty.
"The prosecutor reviewed Camera Two and Three," she said. "They're filing this afternoon."
Chloe stood by Daniel's desk.
"What charge?"
"Aggravated battery to a pregnant woman, with an alternative count of reckless conduct. A warrant request is being prepared."
Daniel's expression did not change.
"When will Ms. Cross be notified?"
"Her attorney will know within the hour."
Chloe thought of Vivian's hands over her mouth.
Then Ethan's hand on Vivian's back.
The footage had not merely shown a push.
May you like
It had shown a choice made by everyone on those steps.
By sunset, Vivian Cross was formally charged with assault.
