Ethan's Choice

Chapter 08 - Ethan's Choice

Ethan came to Daniel's building without an appointment.

He told reception he was delivering medication for Chloe, though the paper pharmacy bag contained only prenatal vitamins she already had.

Security called upstairs at four twenty.

Daniel answered from the conference room, where he and Lena were reviewing subpoenas.

"Send him away."

The guard hesitated.

"Mr. Bennett says it's urgent."

"Everything becomes urgent when a person is told no."

Chloe sat at the far end of the table with a blanket over her knees. Dr. Reyes had allowed her to leave the apartment for one medical appointment and two hours at Daniel's office, provided she spent most of that time sitting.

"Let him come up," she said.

Daniel covered the receiver.

"No."

"I want to hear why he's here."

"He wants access."

"Then give him a room with glass walls and three witnesses."

Daniel looked at Lena.

She shrugged.

"I'll take notes."

Ethan arrived six minutes later.

His hair was damp from sleet, and his collar sat crooked beneath his coat. He looked tired in a way Chloe once would have tried to fix with food, sleep, or forgiveness.

He stopped when he saw her.

"You're here."

"I am."

His eyes moved toward her stomach.

"How's the baby?"

"Stable."

"Can I sit?"

Daniel pointed to the chair nearest the door.

Ethan set the pharmacy bag on the table.

"I brought your vitamins."

"I have vitamins."

"I didn't know."

"You could've asked by email through counsel."

Ethan glanced at Daniel.

"This doesn't need to be a legal conference."

"Then you chose the wrong building," Daniel said.

Chloe touched her locket.

The safety pin beneath her collar felt cold.

"What do you want, Ethan?"

He rested both hands on the table.

"I want to stop this from getting worse."

"For whom?"

"For everyone."

Daniel opened a legal pad.

Ethan noticed.

"Seriously?"

"Keep talking."

"This is exactly why I didn't want your brother involved."

Chloe's voice stayed soft.

"You asked me to call the assault an accident from my hospital bed."

"I asked you not to destroy three lives over one terrible second."

"Which three?"

Ethan looked at her.

"You. Me. Vivian."

"Not the baby?"

His face tightened.

"Of course the baby."

"Then say four."

Lena's pen moved across the page.

Ethan pushed the paper bag away.

"Vivian is scared. Her attorney says the district attorney may charge her before the full video is reviewed."

"She should be scared," Daniel said.

Ethan ignored him.

"She panicked. You said something cruel, and she reacted."

Chloe turned her wedding ring once.

"What did I say?"

Ethan hesitated.

"That she was pathetic."

"That isn't what I said."

"Close enough."

"No."

He rubbed his forehead.

"Why does every word have to be exact with you?"

"Because you're changing them."

A heating vent clicked beneath the windows.

Ethan looked toward the river.

"I loved you, Chloe."

She waited.

He seemed unsettled by the silence.

"I still care about you. I don't want you under this kind of stress."

"You brought the source of the stress to mediation."

"Vivian insisted on driving."

"Why?"

"My car is being repaired."

"What happened to it?"

"Nothing. Routine work."

"Which shop?"

Daniel's gaze lifted.

Ethan blinked.

"What does that matter?"

"It doesn't, unless you're lying."

"I'm not."

He looked at Daniel again.

"I came here to talk about a resolution."

Daniel placed the legal pad flat.

"Your counsel can send a proposal."

"I want to hear what Chloe wants."

"Full financial disclosure," she said. "No direct contact. Cooperation with the assault investigation."

Ethan laughed quietly.

"You sound like him now."

"No. I sound like someone who stopped trusting you."

He leaned forward.

"The account transfers were temporary."

Daniel's expression did not move.

Chloe's pulse quickened.

She had not mentioned the accounts.

Her emergency motion had been filed under restricted access that morning. Ethan's attorney knew, but Ethan had not yet been served.

"What transfers?" she asked.

Ethan realized too late.

"The ones you're accusing me of making."

"I haven't accused you of anything."

"Daniel just said full disclosure."

"That covers six years of marriage."

Ethan sat back.

Lena stopped writing for one second, then continued.

Chloe turned her ring a second time.

"Where did the money go?"

"Business investments."

"Whose business?"

"A logistics opportunity."

"Name it."

"It's confidential."

Daniel spoke without raising his voice.

"Marital money isn't confidential from the other spouse."

Ethan's knee bounced beneath the table.

"It was going back."

"When?" Chloe asked.

"After closing."

"What closing?"

He glanced at the windows again.

"A distribution facility."

"Where?"

"Indiana."

"Which county?"

"Chloe, stop."

She turned the ring a third time.

"No."

Ethan's face flushed.

"I moved it because I knew you'd freeze everything once you filed. I had to protect the deal."

There it was.

Not confusion. Not a clerical mistake.

Intent.

Daniel's pen remained still, but Chloe knew he had caught every word.

"How long had you known I would file?" she asked.

Ethan's mouth tightened.

"I knew you were emotional."

"How long?"

"Since you found out about Vivian."

"Four months."

He said nothing.

The first transfer had occurred four days after Lake Geneva.

Chloe looked at the man across from her.

Before Vivian's hands struck her, before the mediation, before he stood at the top of the steps, Ethan had been preparing to leave her with less.

"Did Vivian know about the transfers?"

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

Daniel closed the legal pad.

"Interview over."

Ethan stood.

"I came in good faith."

"You came because you learned the court can freeze the account," Daniel said.

"I came for my wife."

"Your wife asked where the money went. You still haven't answered."

Ethan looked at Chloe.

"Don't let him turn us into enemies."

She felt Poppy move low beneath her ribs.

"We became enemies when you decided I was someone you had to hide money from."

"That's not fair."

"No. It isn't."

Daniel pressed the conference-room phone.

"Security, please escort Mr. Bennett out."

Ethan's voice dropped.

"Chloe, Vivian isn't safe right now. She's terrified. If something happens to her because of this..."

Chloe stared at him.

"You came here to make me responsible for her."

"I didn't say that."

"You didn't have to."

The security guard appeared at the door.

Ethan picked up the pharmacy bag, then left it on the table again. His indecision lasted only a second, but it looked like the entire marriage.

After he was gone, Lena read back the relevant statements.

*The account transfers were temporary.*

*I moved it because I knew you'd freeze everything.*

*Since you found out about Vivian.*

Daniel underlined the last sentence.

"Admission of intent to conceal marital funds."

Chloe sat very still.

Lena closed her notebook.

"You all right?"

"Yes."

It was true in the limited way hospital numbers could be true.

Breathing. Stable. No immediate crisis.

Inside, Chloe kept seeing Ethan on the nursery floor with two extra screws in his palm.

That memory no longer softened him.

It only proved how long someone could be familiar without being known.

Daniel slid the prenatal vitamins toward the trash.

Chloe stopped him.

"Keep the bag."

"Why?"

"He said he brought medication. The receipt may show when and where he bought it."

Daniel looked at the stapled paper.

Purchased twelve minutes before Ethan arrived.

Not care prepared at home.

A prop.

Chloe looked through the glass wall toward the elevators.

Ethan had not come to protect Vivian after the fall.

He had been protecting his money before she was ever pushed.
