Claire's Secret

Chapter 08 - Claire's Secret
Claire's decision to come forward formally, made over the following week with the careful support of a trauma counselor Marisol had connected her with, transformed the shape of the entire investigation considerably.
"Her testimony establishes a pattern extending back six years, minimum," Marisol explained to Adrian and Bianca, reviewing the case's expanding scope. "Combined with the security footage and the two other women who've agreed to speak with investigators, we now have a documented pattern spanning multiple years and multiple victims, rather than a single, isolated incident."
Adrian sat with the full weight of that timeline, understanding that his father's predatory behavior had apparently begun, at minimum, when Claire was twenty-two, meaning it had continued, undetected, through years of family holidays, business galas, and ordinary Sunday dinners that Adrian now understood he'd experienced entirely differently than the women around him had.
"I keep thinking about every moment I complimented him," Adrian said quietly, during a rare quiet evening at home with Bianca, both of them still navigating the specific, exhausted aftermath of the past two weeks. "Every toast I gave at his birthday, every time I told people how much I admired him. I was praising a man capable of this, and I never once suspected it."
"You couldn't have known," Bianca said gently. "He was very good at making sure you never would."
"That doesn't make it feel less like my own failure," Adrian said. "Claire carried this alone for six years, in the same house as me. I should have noticed something was wrong. I should have asked harder questions."
Bianca reached for his hand, the specific, careful rebuilding of trust between them still fragile but genuinely, steadily strengthening with each honest conversation like this one.
"I think that's a very common feeling, after something like this comes out," she said. "Everyone close to the family wondering what they missed. I don't think it's fair to yourself, though. Predators like your father spend years perfecting exactly how to avoid detection. That's not a failure of the people around them. That's the specific, calculated skill of the person doing the harming."
Detective Wren Ostrander, assigned to the expanding investigation once the pattern of multiple victims became clear, met with the family regularly over the following weeks, coordinating carefully between the criminal investigation and the civil case Marisol was building on Bianca's behalf.
"I want to prepare you all for a longer process than any of you are probably hoping for," Ostrander told them, during one such meeting. "Cases involving multiple victims, spanning years, with a defendant who has considerable resources for legal defense, tend to move slowly and carefully. I want your patience, and I want your continued cooperation, exactly as thorough as it's already been."
"What about the assault case against Bianca," Adrian asked. "Now that the charges are withdrawn."
"I believe the self-defense evidence is more than sufficient," Ostrander said, "should Edmund's legal team attempt to revive any version of those charges once he regains consciousness. I want you prepared for that possibility, given how much he potentially stands to lose once the full scope of this investigation becomes public."

Edmund, still hospitalized, remained in a carefully monitored, medically induced state of partial sedation, his cardiac condition requiring close observation before doctors would consider bringing him fully back to consciousness.
The family, gathered in a waiting room they'd all but moved into over the preceding two weeks, existed in a strange, suspended state, grieving a version of Edmund they'd once believed in while simultaneously building, with growing clarity, an entirely different, considerably more accurate account of who he'd actually been all along.
