The Private Room

Chapter 05 - The Private Room
Marisol Vance moved quickly once she learned of the formal charges, filing a countermotion the same afternoon that laid out, carefully and clinically, the basis for a self-defense claim, along with a formal request that the estate's private security footage from the evening be preserved and reviewed immediately.
"Most estates this size have cameras covering every room used for private meetings," Marisol explained to Adrian and Bianca, meeting them at her office the following morning. "If your father's study has a camera, and if the footage still exists, it may be the single most important piece of evidence in this entire case."
"I need to see it," Adrian said. "Whatever it shows. I need to actually see what happened in that room."
Marisol hesitated. "I want to prepare you for the possibility that watching it may be considerably more difficult than you're expecting, given everything Bianca's already told you."
"I need to see it anyway," Adrian said. "I owe her that much, at minimum, after what I did in that ballroom."
The estate's head of security, a longtime employee named Elias Ward, confirmed the study's camera had indeed captured the full fifteen minutes, footage he'd already flagged and preserved the moment he'd heard about the formal charges, uncertain himself what role it might eventually play.
"I want to be honest with you both," Elias told Adrian and Marisol, before playing the footage. "I've worked for your family for nineteen years, Adrian. I've seen things over the years I chose not to examine too closely, because it wasn't my place, or because I told myself I was misreading what I was seeing. I don't think I can tell myself that story anymore, after what's on this recording."
The footage, once it played, confirmed everything Bianca had already described, Edmund's hand closing around her wrist, his voice inaudible on the muted security feed but his body language unmistakable, cornering her against the desk, the specific, calculated menace of a man completely confident he would never face any consequence for what he was doing.
Adrian watched it in silence, his jaw tight, tears finally falling freely by the time the footage ended with Bianca pulling free and fleeing the room.
"I'm so sorry," he said, turning to Bianca, voice breaking completely. "I hit you. After this. I hit you for defending yourself against exactly what I just watched him do."
"You didn't know," Bianca said quietly, though her own voice carried a complicated mixture of forgiveness and something considerably more guarded, the specific wariness of someone who understood forgiveness and full trust were not yet the same thing.
"I should have asked before I ever raised my hand," Adrian said. "I've been telling myself that since the moment it happened, and watching this just makes it so much worse."
Elias cleared his throat carefully. "There's something else you should both know. This isn't the first time this particular camera has caught something concerning in that study. I pulled the archived footage this morning, going back three years, once I understood what I might be looking for."
Adrian felt his stomach drop entirely. "How many times."
"I found four other incidents," Elias said quietly. "Different women. Staff members, mostly, though one appears to be a family friend. I haven't watched any of them in full detail. I wanted to bring this to you and your attorney immediately, rather than making that decision on my own."
Marisol was already reaching for her phone. "I need copies of every single one of those recordings, secured properly, before anyone has the chance to delete or alter them."
Adrian sat frozen, the specific horror of understanding his father's predatory behavior toward his wife wasn't an isolated, terrible mistake, but part of a pattern that had apparently continued, undetected or ignored, for years inside his own family's home.

"How did nobody catch this," he said, more to himself than to anyone else in the room. "How did none of us ever see this."
"Some people are very good at being seen exactly the way they want to be seen," Marisol said quietly. "Especially people with money, and power, and decades of practice making sure nobody looks too closely at what's actually happening behind closed doors."
