Rosalind's Denial

Chapter 07 - Rosalind's Denial

Rosalind formally withdrew the assault charges against Bianca that same afternoon, a decision that made local headlines within hours given the Bellamy family's considerable public profile, reporters already circling the story with a hunger Marisol had warned them to expect.

"I want to control this narrative carefully," Marisol told the family, gathered in a tense meeting at her office. "Once word gets out about the security footage, and it will get out, this is going to become considerably bigger than a single family's private crisis. I want us prepared to handle that with the survivors' interests placed first, not the family's reputation."

"How many other victims have you identified," Adrian asked.

"Elias found four other incidents on the archived footage," Marisol said. "We've identified three of the women so far. Two former household staff members, and one woman who appears to be a friend of Rosalind's from her charity board."

"Have you contacted them," Bianca asked.

"Carefully, and with considerable sensitivity," Marisol said. "Two have agreed to speak with investigators. One has declined any involvement so far, which is entirely her right, and we're respecting that boundary completely."

Claire, present for this meeting for the first time since the hospital waiting room, sat very still, her hands folded tightly in her lap, something in her posture telling Bianca, watching her carefully, that there was more to this story than anyone in the room yet understood.

"Claire," Bianca said gently, once the formal meeting had wound down and most of the family had stepped out. "At the hospital, you told Adrian to ask me directly what happened. How did you know something had happened."

Claire's composure cracked slowly, tears beginning to fall as she finally, after years of careful silence, allowed herself to say what she'd never once told anyone in her family directly.

"Because he did the same thing to me," she said quietly. "Six years ago. I was twenty-two. I never told anyone, because I didn't think anyone would believe me over him, and because I was terrified of what it would do to this family if I ever said it out loud."

Adrian felt his whole body go still, the specific, devastating horror of understanding his own sister had carried this alone for six years, in the same house, at the same family gatherings, while everyone around her remained entirely unaware.

"Claire," he said, voice breaking. "Why didn't you tell me."

"Because you loved him," Claire said simply. "Because everyone loved him, publicly, completely, and I didn't think I could survive being the person who shattered that for this entire family. I told myself it was easier to just, carry it quietly."

Bianca reached for Claire's hand, the specific, immediate solidarity of two women who suddenly understood they'd been carrying nearly identical burdens in painful isolation from each other for years.

"You don't have to carry it quietly anymore," Bianca said. "Not if you don't want to. I understand completely if you're not ready to come forward formally. I just want you to know you're not alone in this anymore, not for one more day."

Claire nodded, tears falling freely now, and Marisol, watching the exchange with careful professional attention, made a quiet note that would, in the coming weeks, become one of the most significant pieces of testimony in an investigation that had grown considerably larger than anyone at that first gala had ever anticipated.

"I want to help," Claire said finally. "If it means he never does this to anyone else again, I want to help however I can, even if that means finally saying this out loud publicly, after six years of silence."
