The First Husband

Chapter 06 - The First Husband
Julian Marsh's answer sent Elena's investigation across three state lines and back nine years, to a name neither Nathan Hale nor anyone in his family had ever heard before that afternoon.
"Her name was Sandra Whitlock, back then," Julian said. "Vanessa's real first name is actually Diane. Diane Whitlock. She's used four different names over the years, always tied to a new city, a new target."
"And Vanessa's first husband?"
"Richard Kessler. Widowed, owned a chain of auto dealerships in Ohio, thirty years older than her. They married nine years ago. He died fourteen months later of what was ruled a stroke."
Elena felt the same cold recognition she'd felt reading Eleanor Hale's file the night before.
"Was there a doctor involved that time too?"
"A different one. Someone Vanessa — Diane, then — found through a nurse she'd befriended at a hospital fundraiser. Same pattern. Reduce testing, sign off quickly, no deeper investigation. Richard's family never questioned it because he genuinely had a family history of stroke. It looked completely natural."
"And the money?"
"Life insurance, mostly. Two point one million dollars. Plus a controlling stake in the dealership chain that she quietly sold off over the following two years, careful never to draw attention with a single large transaction."
"Where does that money exist now?"
Julian gave Elena three offshore account numbers from memory, the same unsettling fluency Elena had already noted in the hotel video when Vanessa recited financial details without hesitation.
"Mr. Marsh," Elena said, "how did you two meet, if Vanessa had already been through one of these before you came along?"
Julian's face did something complicated — pride and shame tangled together in a way that made Elena's skin crawl.
"I found her, actually. Not the other way around. I read about Richard Kessler's death in an Ohio business journal three years after it happened, doing research for something completely unrelated. Something about the timeline felt off to me — young wife, quick death, quiet sale of assets. I looked into it. Eventually I tracked down 'Diane Whitlock' under a new name in a different city and I introduced myself."
"You blackmailed her."
"I proposed a partnership," Julian said, and the clinical, businesslike phrasing of it made Elena's stomach turn more than any confession of violence would have. "I told her I knew what she'd done, and instead of going to the police, I offered to help her do it better. Smarter targeting, cleaner exits, better financial structuring so the money couldn't be traced back as easily. She agreed within a week."

"So Eleanor Hale wasn't her first crime. It was your first crime together."
"Our first successful one, yes. And Nathan Hale was supposed to be our biggest."
