Julian's Real Name

Chapter 05 - Julian's Real Name
Identifying the man from the hotel video took Elena's team less than a day, once they had something to work with beyond a first name and a voice.
Hotel security footage from the Ritz-Carlton's fourth-floor hallway camera — positioned to cover the elevator bank rather than individual room doors, but close enough to catch faces coming and going — showed a man matching the video's build and hair color entering Vanessa's room at 1:47 PM and leaving at 6:15 PM.
Facial recognition matched him within minutes: Julian Marsh, thirty-six years old, no relation to any prior alias despite the surname's uncomfortable echo of other cases Elena had worked. He held a business degree from a mid-tier university, a spotty employment history heavy on short-term "investment consulting" roles, and, buried three layers into public records, a marriage certificate.
Julian Marsh was married.
To Vanessa Cross.
Not divorced. Not separated on paper, whatever the emotional reality between them might have become. Legally, currently, still married — which meant the wedding that had just collapsed in front of three hundred guests wasn't simply a broken engagement uncovered at the worst possible moment.
It was bigamy.
"She was never free to marry Nathan Hale at all," Elena told her lieutenant that evening, laying the marriage certificate on his desk beside a printout of the wedding program from that afternoon. "Whatever ceremony happened in that ballroom, it was void from the moment she said 'I do.'"

Julian Marsh was picked up two days later at a short-term rental apartment forty minutes from the Hale estate, packing a suitcase with the unhurried calm of a man who genuinely believed he had time.
He did not.
"Mr. Marsh, you're under arrest in connection with conspiracy to commit murder and fraud related to the death of Eleanor Hale, and conspiracy in a planned attempt against Nathan Hale."
Julian's composure held for almost the entire ride to the station. It cracked exactly once, when Elena mentioned that Vanessa had already been in custody for thirty-six hours and had spent every one of those hours declining to speak to investigators without her own attorney present.
"She hasn't asked for me?" Julian said. Quiet. Almost hurt, in a way that struck Elena as strange given everything they already knew about what these two people had built together. "Not even once?"
"Should she have?"
Julian didn't answer that directly. Instead, over the following six hours of questioning, he told Elena almost everything — not out of loyalty to justice, but out of the particular, desperate self-preservation of a man who had just realized, for the first time, that the woman he loved might let him take the full weight of what they'd done together alone.
"This wasn't the first time," he admitted. "Eleanor Hale was the second."

Elena set down her pen.
"Who was the first?"
