Chapter 10 - The Verdict
The jury deliberated for nine hours across two days before returning with verdicts on every count.
Guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Richard Kessler. Guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Eleanor Hale. Guilty of conspiracy to commit murder in the planned death of Nathan Hale. Guilty of bigamy, fraud, and financial crimes spanning three states and nine years.
Vanessa Cross — Diane Whitlock — showed no visible emotion as the verdicts were read, the same flat composure Elena had noted since the interview room, unmoved by nine years of consequences finally arriving at once.
She was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Dr. Warren Castellano pleaded guilty to falsifying medical records and accepting bribes, losing his medical license permanently and receiving a six-year sentence that his attorney called "a fair reckoning for a man who chose comfort over conscience, twice."
Julian Marsh received life imprisonment as well, his cooperation earning him eligibility for parole after twenty-five years — a distinction that felt, to everyone in that courtroom, more technical than meaningful given the scope of what he'd helped orchestrate.

Outside the courthouse, reporters swarmed Nathan and Rosa in equal measure, shouting questions that blurred together into a single wall of noise neither of them fully absorbed.
"Mr. Hale, how does it feel to know you nearly died the same way your mother did?"
"Ms. Delgado, why did you risk your job to expose this at the altar instead of going to police first?"

Rosa answered that one, standing slightly in front of Nathan the way she'd once stood in front of Vanessa in that ballroom.
"Because I went to people with authority before, quietly, and I was told grief makes people imagine things that aren't there. I learned that some truths only get heard when you make them impossible to ignore. I'm not proud of how dramatic it had to be. I'm just grateful it worked before it was too late."
