Chapter 10 - The Custody Trap
Farrah Nasser, the family attorney Derek retained to formally sever any legal standing Gloria might otherwise have retained regarding Jake, reviewed the full scope of evidence with a specific, thorough care given the stakes involved.
"I want to file for a formal protective order," Farrah told Derek and Megan, "prohibiting any contact between Gloria and Jake, unsupervised or otherwise, pending the outcome of her criminal case. Given the documented pattern of premeditated harm, I don't believe any court would hesitate to grant this."
"What about after the criminal case concludes," Megan asked. "Could she ever gain any legal standing to see him again."
"That would depend considerably on the sentencing outcome, and on any conditions the court attaches regarding future contact," Farrah said. "I want to be direct with you both, given the severity of what she attempted, I'd be surprised if any judge granted her meaningful access to Jake for a very long time, if ever."
Derek felt a complicated wave of relief and grief move through him simultaneously, understanding that whatever legal protection Farrah secured would also mean the permanent, formal severing of his mother from his son's daily life, a woman who had, whatever her considerable failures, also genuinely loved Jake for the first seven years of his life.
"I keep thinking about the version of her that used to bake with him every weekend," Derek admitted to Megan, one evening. "The version that showed up to every school event, that Jake used to run to the second she arrived. I don't know how to hold that version alongside what she actually did."
"I don't think you have to fully resolve that," Megan said gently. "I think you're allowed to grieve the grandmother he thought he had, while also protecting him completely from the one who actually existed underneath that performance."
The formal protective order was granted within two weeks, the judge citing the documented medical evidence and Gloria's own confession as more than sufficient grounds for immediate, comprehensive separation.
Gloria, informed of the ruling through her attorney, requested one final conversation with Derek before the order took full effect, a request Derek debated for several days before finally, cautiously agreeing to a brief, supervised meeting.
"I don't expect you to forgive me," Gloria told him, tears falling freely. "I want you to know I understand exactly what I've lost, beyond just the legal consequences. I've lost the chance to actually be Jake's grandmother, in any real, ongoing way, possibly for the rest of his childhood."

"You did that to yourself," Derek said, voice steady despite the grief still tangled underneath his anger. "I need you to actually understand that clearly, Mom. Not fate, not circumstances beyond your control. A choice you made, repeatedly, over months, to hurt my wife in order to take my son."
Gloria had no response to that, the specific, complete weight of accountability finally, fully settling over her.
