Vivian's Motive

Chapter 08 - Vivian's Motive

The forensic accountants' full report on the foundation's financial records arrived three weeks after the arrest, painting a picture considerably larger than the initial discrepancies Mia had flagged during her routine audit.

Over fifteen years, Vivian had diverted an estimated four point seven million dollars from the charity care fund into a private holding account, using the foundation's public giving as cover for a financial structure that kept the family's actual wealth considerably larger than public records suggested, while simultaneously building her personal reputation as a generous, selfless benefactor.

"The charity care fund was specifically designated for patients who couldn't afford treatment," Cruz explained, presenting the findings to Marco and Mia together in the hospital's small conference room. "Every dollar she diverted came directly at the expense of people who needed care and didn't receive it."

Marco sat with the number, the specific horror of understanding exactly how much real harm his mother's careful deception had caused beyond his own family, patients who'd been quietly failed for over a decade to fund a public image of generosity that was, underneath, a calculated theft.

"Why did she need the money," Mia asked. "The family already had significant wealth. What was four point seven million actually funding."

"A separate, undisclosed real estate portfolio," Cruz said. "Properties held under shell companies, none of it connected publicly to the Delgado name. Our working theory is that she was building an independent financial base, entirely separate from the family's known assets, potentially as a form of personal security against any future challenge to her control of the estate."

"Insurance against being questioned," Marco said slowly. "In case anyone ever discovered what she'd done to Dad."

"That's consistent with the pattern," Cruz said. "A woman who commits an act as significant as what we suspect happened twenty years ago often builds contingencies for the possibility of eventual exposure, financial resources she can access if her position in the family or the community is ever seriously threatened."

Mia thought of her own audit, three weeks before the fall, the specific moment she'd flagged the discrepancy and brought it to Vivian directly, trusting her enough to give her a chance to explain before escalating it formally.

"I nearly became exactly the threat she was preparing for," Mia said quietly. "Without even knowing that's what I was doing."

"You were doing your job honestly," Cruz said. "That's not something to feel guilty about, regardless of how dangerous it turned out to be."

Marco reached for Mia's hand, the specific gratitude of understanding how close he'd come to losing her over a routine audit neither of them could have known would uncover something this significant.

"We need everything documented," he said. "Every dollar, every property, every shell company. I want this case airtight, for Mia's sake and for every patient who was failed because of what my mother did."
