The Pillow

Chapter 01 - The Pillow
Rain ran steady down the tall window of the recovery suite, teal walls holding the dim medical light close, the heart monitor's soft rhythm the only sound in the room until Vivian leaned over the bed.
Mia felt the pillow before she understood what was happening, pressure closing over her mouth and nose, the softness turning suddenly, terribly solid.
She clawed at the edge, fingers finding Vivian's wrist, twisting her head sideways, kicking weakly beneath the blanket. The bed shook. The IV line trembled. The monitor's beeping accelerated into something frantic.
Vivian held the black hospital remote in one hand, her forearm pressing the pillow down with the other, cold fury in every line of her elegant, composed face.
"You should have died when you fell," she said, voice low and clear, "you worthless nobody."
The sliding wooden door slammed open.
Marco rushed in, two coffee cups in his hands, two hospital administrators and two camera operators close behind him, bright lights flooding the room in the same instant.
Vivian jerked the pillow away, turning toward the door, completely caught.
"Ahhh!" she screamed, sharp and frightened, camera shutters already firing.
Marco froze, seeing the pillow in his mother's hands, his wife gasping on the bed. His fingers loosened. Both coffee cups fell, striking the floor, bursting open, coffee spreading dark across the polished tile.
His face shifted from confusion to horror in the span of a single breath.
Mia rolled to one side, coughing, pulling in desperate breaths. Vivian backed away from the bed, still gripping the pillow and the remote, looking from Marco to the cameras, understanding all at once that everything had just been witnessed.
One camera operator kept filming her.
Marco stepped toward the bed, stunned, unable to speak yet. The music of the room, if there had been any, dropped to nothing, leaving only Mia's ragged breathing, the monitor's beeps, distant shutters still clicking.
He reached her side, gently supporting her shoulder.
Mia struggled to focus on him, weak and frightened, not looking toward the cameras, not suddenly finding some reserve of strength she didn't have.
She gripped his sleeve.
"Ask her," she whispered, "what happened on the stairs."
Marco froze.
He remembered his mother's words from seconds ago. *You should have died when you fell.*
His expression shifted from shock to suspicion, slow and complete.
He turned toward Vivian.
She'd stopped backing away. Her hand tightened around the black remote, trying to hide it behind her coat.
He noticed the movement.

"Mom," he said.
Vivian's face lost all color.
