Chapter 07 - The Staircase Camera
The estate's security system, installed years after Marco's father's death but still covering the main staircase where Vivian had pushed Mia three weeks earlier, became the case's most immediate piece of hard evidence.
Cruz's team retrieved the footage within days, the system's older storage cycling through recordings on a rolling basis, but the specific date of Mia's fall, fortunately, still archived before it could be overwritten.
The footage showed exactly what Mia had described. Vivian and Mia standing at the top of the staircase, a brief conversation, Vivian's hand extending suddenly, deliberately, against Mia's shoulder, the fall that followed immediate and unmistakable.
"This is conclusive," Cruz said, reviewing the footage with Marco present, his face pale watching his mother's calm, deliberate violence play out on the screen in front of him. "There's no ambiguity here. This wasn't an accident, and it wasn't a sudden loss of balance. This was a clear, intentional push."
Marco said nothing for a long moment, watching the footage a second time, then a third, as though repetition might somehow soften what he was seeing.
"She looks so calm," he finally said. "Right before and right after. Like she'd done something as simple as closing a door."
"That's consistent with what we've seen in her behavior at the hospital as well," Cruz said. "A woman capable of significant, deliberate harm while maintaining complete social composure throughout. That's a specific and dangerous profile."
The footage, combined with the hospital's own security recordings from the pillow incident and Vivian's recorded statement during her arrest, built a case Cruz described as one of the strongest she'd worked in years, physical evidence eliminating almost entirely the need to rely on circumstantial reasoning or character testimony.
"What about my father," Marco asked. "Is there any footage from that far back."
"Unfortunately no," Cruz said. "The estate's system wasn't installed until eight years after his death. We won't have direct visual evidence for that incident. We'll need to rely on other methods, financial records, witness re-interviews, forensic reconstruction of what limited physical evidence still exists from the original investigation."
Marco absorbed that, the specific frustration of understanding his father's case would likely never reach the same level of certainty Mia's case now had, the passage of two decades having erased most of what might have proven the truth conclusively.

"Even if we can't prove it fully," Mia said gently, "what we do have proves enough to keep her from ever hurting anyone else again. That matters, even if it's not everything."
Marco nodded, though the specific grief of an unresolved question about his father lingered, a wound that might never fully close the way Mia's case now clearly would.
