The formal toxicology report arrived a week later, confirming the exact composition of the pill Judith had attempted to dissolve in Elena's water, the combination clinically consistent with an early pregnancy termination protocol rather than any legitimate prenatal supplement.
Elena's obstetrician, informed of the full incident, ran additional monitoring to confirm the pregnancy remained entirely unaffected, the confrontation in the kitchen having interrupted the attempt before any dose was actually ingested.
"The baby's completely healthy," the doctor confirmed, during Elena's follow-up appointment. "No indication of any exposure or complication. You caught it in time."
Elena exhaled, a relief she'd been holding since the kitchen finally allowed to settle fully.
Marcus, present for the appointment, held her hand throughout, the specific gratitude of understanding exactly how close they'd come to a loss neither of them would have fully recovered from.
"I want this formally reported," Elena said, once they were alone in the car afterward. "Not just processed quietly within the family. She needs to face actual legal consequences for what she did, regardless of the reasons behind it."
"I agree," Marcus said. "I've already spoken with a detective. Attempted forced termination of a pregnancy without consent carries serious charges in this state, separate from any family history or context surrounding her motive."
"How do you feel about that," Elena asked. "Reporting your own mother."
Marcus considered the question honestly, the specific complexity of loving someone capable of something this devastating.
"Conflicted," he admitted. "I don't feel good about it. I feel like it's necessary regardless of how it feels. What she did wasn't a private family matter that stays contained to an apology and some distance. She tried to end a pregnancy through deception and drugging, without either of our consent. That's a crime, and pretending otherwise because she's my mother would be its own kind of dishonesty."
Elena nodded, understanding the specific weight Marcus was carrying, grief and accountability sitting uncomfortably close together in every decision they were making now.
Detective Renata Okafor, assigned to the case, interviewed Judith formally the following week, Judith's own attorney present throughout, her explanation matching what she'd already told Marcus and Elena, the trust clause, the fear, the decades of secrecy that had culminated in a single, catastrophic decision.
"The evidence is straightforward," Okafor told Marcus and Elena afterward. "The pill, the confession regarding motive, the toxicology confirming intent. This isn't a difficult case to prosecute, regardless of how emotionally complicated the family circumstances are."

"Formal charges," Okafor said. "Attempted feticide, given the state's specific statute language, along with reckless endangerment given the method used. Given her age and lack of prior record, I'd expect her attorney to pursue a plea agreement rather than risk a full trial."
