Chapter 03 - The Trust's Clause
Judith agreed to talk, eventually, in a small consultation room the hospital provided once Elena had been checked over and cleared, the pregnancy itself, thankfully, entirely undisturbed by the confrontation.
"It's about the trust," Judith said finally, hands folded tightly in her lap. "The Calder family trust, the one your grandfather established three generations back."
"What does the trust have to do with poisoning my wife," Marcus said, voice still shaking with barely controlled fury.
"The trust has a verification clause," Judith said slowly. "Any new heir born into the family line must undergo genetic confirmation before being formally added to the succession registry. It's meant to prevent fraudulent claims to the estate."
"That's standard for family trusts this size," Marcus said. "I've known about that clause since I was a teenager. What does it have to do with tonight."
Judith was quiet a long moment, the specific silence of someone deciding whether to finally say something she'd spent decades avoiding.
"Your father wasn't able to have children," she said. "Richard. A childhood illness left him unable to conceive. We didn't discover it until years into our marriage, well after everyone, including his own parents, expected an heir."
Marcus felt something cold settle in his chest, a suspicion forming before Judith had finished the sentence.
"What did you do," he asked.
"I conceived you through a donor," Judith said. "Without your father's family knowing. Richard knew. He agreed to it, desperate for an heir of his own, even one who wasn't biologically his. We told no one else, ever. As far as this family has ever known, you are Richard Calder's biological son."
Marcus sat frozen, forty years of understanding his own identity rearranging itself in real time.
"I'm not his son," he said slowly.
"Biologically, no," Judith said. "In every other way that ever mattered, yes. He loved you completely. He never once treated you differently."

"And the baby," Marcus said, the full shape of tonight finally, horribly clear. "The genetic verification clause. If Elena's baby goes through the standard confirmation process."
"It will show you're not a genetic match to Richard's line," Judith said. "Which means the baby wouldn't be either. Which means, under the trust's exact language, neither of you has any legitimate claim to the Calder estate at all."
