The Sealed Letter

Chapter 06 - The Sealed Letter
Marcus opened the letter alone, in Corinne's office that afternoon, his father's familiar handwriting covering two full pages, dated nearly fifteen years earlier, several years before Richard's death.
*Marcus,* the letter began, *if you're reading this, the clause has been triggered, which means either you're preparing to have a child of your own, or someone else has forced the question before its time. Either way, I owe you the truth directly, in my own words, rather than letting your mother carry the burden of explaining it alone.*
Marcus read on, his father's voice unmistakable even on paper, warm and direct in exactly the way Marcus remembered him.
*You are not my biological son. Your mother and I made that choice together, out of love, after learning I couldn't give her a child of my own. I have never once regretted it. You have been entirely my son in every way that has ever mattered to me, and I want you to know that clearly, in my own hand, so no lawyer's clause and no anxious relative can ever make you doubt it.*
*I anticipated this exact problem years ago, when the estate's original verification clause was drafted by my grandfather. I petitioned the trust's oversight board quietly, eight years before writing this letter, to add a specific amendment covering circumstances exactly like this one. I did not want my own fear of exposure to ever become your burden, or the burden of any child you might one day have.*
Marcus's hands were shaking now, reading faster, searching for whatever solution his father had apparently already built into the trust's structure years before any of tonight's crisis had unfolded.
*The amendment states that any heir raised as a Calder from infancy, regardless of biological origin, retains full succession rights, provided the sitting trustee at the time of verification formally attests to the heir's lifelong inclusion in the family. I am, and remain, that attesting trustee. This letter serves as my formal, written attestation, valid regardless of when it is opened.*
*You were always going to inherit, Marcus. There was never actually a threat here, except the one your mother's fear built out of a problem I solved years before either of you needed to worry about it.*
Marcus sat back, the letter trembling in his hands, a complicated wave of relief and fresh grief washing over him simultaneously.
*She tried to end my child's life,* he thought, *over a threat that never actually existed, because she never trusted him enough to tell her the truth, and never trusted me enough to believe I'd handle it.*

He called Corinne back into the office.
"I need this formally verified and entered into the trust's active records immediately," he said. "And I need you to prepare everything necessary to confirm my daughter's succession rights the moment she's born, using exactly this attestation."
