The Ceremony Begins

Chapter 09 - The Ceremony Begins

The garden looked exactly the way Emma had imagined it for months, string lights woven through the trees, rows of white chairs facing an arch covered in late summer flowers, the mountain air carrying the specific, clean scent of rain-washed pine.

What she hadn't imagined were the four discreet security officers positioned at careful intervals around the perimeter, or the two unmarked police vehicles parked just beyond the guest parking area, or the specific, watchful tension in Walter Cole's expression as he greeted arriving guests with practiced warmth that didn't quite reach his eyes.

Emma stood in the small dressing room attached to the main lodge, her mother's absence sitting heavy in a day that should have included her, however complicated that inclusion might have looked.

"You look beautiful," Diane said, adjusting the final pin in Emma's hair, her own eyes glistening slightly. "How are you feeling."

"Terrified," Emma admitted. "And happy. I didn't know both could exist at the same time this intensely."

"They can," Diane said. "I promise you, from experience, they absolutely can."

Paige knocked and stepped inside, her expression carefully neutral in the specific way that told Emma something significant had happened before she'd even spoken a word.

"Detective Castillo wants a quick word," Paige said. "Nothing urgent, she wants me to be clear about that. Just an update."

Castillo stepped inside a moment later, her professional calm intact despite the visible tension in her shoulders.

"The protective order came through an hour early," she said. "It's officially in effect. If Frank Bishop attempts to enter this property, my officers have full legal authority to arrest him immediately."

Emma felt a small, significant weight lift slightly. "Has there been any sign of him."

"Nothing yet," Castillo said. "I want to be honest that nothing yet doesn't mean nothing at all. I simply want you to walk into that ceremony with accurate information rather than false reassurance."

Emma nodded, grateful for the honesty even as her stomach tightened further.

"I want you to know something else," Castillo added, softer now. "In twelve years of working cases like this, I've seen exactly how much courage it takes to walk forward anyway, knowing the danger might still be out there. What you're doing today, choosing joy in spite of fear, that's not naive. That's some of the bravest work I've ever watched someone do."

Emma held onto those words as she moved toward the garden entrance a few minutes later, her bouquet trembling slightly in her hands, Walter waiting to walk her down the aisle in her own father's absence, an arrangement they'd settled on weeks earlier that felt, now, considerably more significant than either of them had anticipated.

"Ready," Walter asked quietly, offering his arm.

"As ready as I'm going to be," Emma said.

The string quartet began the processional, and Emma stepped forward into golden afternoon light, past rows of guests who had no idea what the past eighteen hours had actually contained, toward Ryan, who stood waiting at the altar with tears already forming in his eyes, watching her walk toward him with a specific, fierce pride that had nothing to do with tradition and everything to do with exactly how much courage this particular walk had required.

Halfway down the aisle, Emma's eyes flicked instinctively toward the tree line at the garden's edge, the same automatic vigilance she'd carried for nine years, scanning for danger even in the middle of her own wedding.

For a fraction of a second, she thought she saw movement between the trees.

Then it was gone, and she forced her eyes back to Ryan, refusing to let fear steal one more second of this day than it had already stolen the night before.
