Movement in the Trees

Chapter 10 - Movement in the Trees
Desmond Okafor caught the same movement Emma had glimpsed, radioing his team the instant his trained eye picked out a shape that didn't belong among the pines at the garden's northern edge.
"Possible subject, tree line, north perimeter," he said quietly into his earpiece, already moving in that direction with careful, unhurried steps designed not to alarm the wedding guests seated just a hundred feet away, entirely unaware that anything beyond an ordinary ceremony was unfolding around them.
Two of Castillo's plainclothes officers converged from opposite directions, coordinating silently through their own earpieces while the ceremony continued, Ryan and Emma exchanging vows entirely unaware of the quiet, careful operation happening at the edges of their own wedding.
The figure in the trees, once officers closed within clear view, matched the description Emma had provided precisely, a heavyset man in his mid-fifties, gray hair, wearing a jacket despite the warm afternoon, positioned at a spot that offered clear, unobstructed sightlines to the altar.
"Frank Bishop," one officer called out, stepping into the clearing with his badge visible. "You're under arrest for violation of an active protective order."
Frank turned, and for a brief, tense moment, something calculating flickered across his face, the specific look of a man weighing his remaining options before understanding, all at once, that he had none left worth pursuing.
He didn't run. He simply raised his hands slowly, the fight visibly draining out of him the moment he understood exactly how thoroughly he'd been anticipated.
"I just wanted to see her," he said, as the officers approached, his voice carrying a strange, almost wounded quality that made Desmond's jaw tighten with a fresh wave of disgust. "That's all. I wasn't going to do anything."
"You can explain that to the judge," the officer said, cuffing him with practiced efficiency. "Right now, you're coming with us."
The arrest happened quietly enough that the ceremony continued entirely uninterrupted, Ryan and Emma exchanging their final vows without ever knowing, until considerably later, exactly how close danger had actually come to their wedding day.
Desmond radioed Walter directly, keeping his voice low and calm. "Subject secured. In custody. Ceremony can proceed without interruption."
Walter, seated in the front row beside Diane, felt a wave of relief wash through him so complete it nearly brought tears to his own eyes, though he kept his expression carefully composed, unwilling to disrupt the specific, hard-won joy currently unfolding at the altar in front of him.
Emma and Ryan finished their vows, exchanged rings, and shared their first kiss as a married couple to warm, genuine applause from a garden full of guests who had no idea what had just happened less than two hundred feet away.
It wasn't until the reception, well into the evening, string lights glowing warm against the darkening mountain sky, that Castillo pulled Ryan aside quietly to deliver the news.
"He's in custody," she said. "Arrested on the property, in direct violation of the protective order. Given the additional evidence we've gathered regarding the historical abuse allegations, I expect prosecutors will pursue charges considerably more serious than simple stalking."
Ryan felt his knees nearly give out with relief, understanding suddenly exactly how close the day had come to unfolding very differently.
"Does Emma know," he asked.
"Not yet," Castillo said. "I wanted you to have the chance to tell her yourself, whenever you think the timing is right. Tonight, tomorrow, whenever feels appropriate for both of you."

Ryan found Emma a few minutes later, laughing with Paige near the dessert table, radiant in a way that made his chest ache with love, and he pulled her gently aside, taking both her hands in his.
"I need to tell you something," he said quietly. "Something that happened during the ceremony, that I think you deserve to know."
