Chapter 07 - Grandma Ruth's Suspicion
Ruth Reeves, Thomas's mother and Lily's paternal grandmother, had voiced quiet concerns about Renata for nearly a year, concerns Thomas remembered now with a specific, uncomfortable clarity he hadn't allowed himself during the months he'd spent dismissing them as an overprotective grandmother's natural wariness of a new stepmother.
"I told you something felt performed about her devotion," Ruth said, sitting in Thomas's living room three days after the search warrant, her voice carrying more restraint than accusation, though the months of unheeded warning sat visibly heavy between them. "Every single time Lily got sick, Renata made sure everyone within earshot knew exactly how exhausted and selfless she was being. I told you it felt like a performance for an audience."
"I know," Thomas said. "I dismissed it. I'm sorry I dismissed it."
"I'm not here to make you feel worse than you already do," Ruth said, her expression softening slightly. "I'm here because I want to help however I actually can, now that someone's finally taking this seriously."
She described, in careful detail, specific moments over the past year that had struck her as calculated rather than genuine, the way Renata had always made sure to describe Lily's symptoms to Ruth in vivid, extended detail, the way she'd seemed almost disappointed on the rare occasions Lily recovered faster than expected.
"She told the church group about Lily's fainting spell for nearly a month afterward," Ruth said. "Long after Lily herself had stopped even mentioning it. It felt, even at the time, like she was more interested in being seen as the caretaker than in Lily actually being well."
Detective Anand, present for this conversation at Thomas's request, took careful notes, adding Ruth's observations to an evidentiary file that was growing considerably more substantial with each passing week.
"I want to be honest with you both," Anand said. "Cases built on pattern and circumstantial observation, however compelling, require considerable corroborating evidence to actually secure a conviction. I don't want to raise expectations about the earlier incidents that the evidence ultimately can't fully support."
"But the diner incident," Thomas said.
"The diner incident has a documented toxicology report, a clear timeline, and a credible expert witness in Casey," Anand said. "That incident, I'm considerably more confident we can build successfully. The earlier pattern will support our understanding of motive and habit, even if it can't stand entirely on its own as separately prosecutable conduct."
Ruth reached for Thomas's hand, an old, familiar gesture from a woman who had watched her granddaughter suffer through an entire year of illness she now understood, with growing horror, had likely never been accidental at all.

"Whatever happens legally," she said, "promise me you'll make sure that woman never gets unsupervised time with Lily again. That's the part that actually matters most right now."
"She's staying with you," Thomas said. "Effective tonight. I should have made that decision considerably sooner than I did."
