Detective Priya Anand, the investigator Casey introduced Thomas to the following week, specialized in exactly the kind of complex family cases that required considerable patience and psychological nuance rather than straightforward physical evidence alone.
"I want to walk through everything with you," Anand said, sitting across from Thomas and Casey in a small interview room, a folder of preliminary notes already open in front of her. "Starting with the diner incident, and then working backward through the pattern you've documented this past year."
Thomas laid out his timeline carefully, March through September, every illness, every symptom, every instance of Renata positioning herself as the sole, devoted caretaker.
"This is a textbook presentation of what we call medical child abuse," Anand said, once she'd reviewed the full timeline. "Historically labeled Munchausen syndrome by proxy, though the clinical field has moved toward more precise, less colorful terminology in recent years. I want you to understand this is a recognized, documented pattern of abuse, not simply an unusual personality quirk."
"How do we prove it," Thomas asked. "Beyond the timeline itself."
"The diner incident gives us something considerably more concrete than any prior episode," Anand said. "A specific substance, a specific toxicology report, a specific witness with relevant medical background who can speak credibly to the deliberate nature of the exposure. I want a formal search of your home, focused on any substances matching the toxicology profile, and I want Lily's complete pediatric records subpoenaed for independent review."
"What about the earlier incidents," Casey asked. "The stomach illness, the rash, the fainting spell. Is there any way to establish those were deliberate too, rather than genuine coincidental illness."
"That's considerably harder to prove retroactively," Anand admitted. "Without physical evidence preserved from those earlier episodes, we're largely dependent on pattern and circumstantial timing. What I can tell you is that pattern evidence, presented carefully, often proves compelling to prosecutors and, eventually, juries, even without physical proof for every individual incident."
The search of Thomas and Renata's home, conducted three days later, yielded several cleaning products containing compounds consistent with the toxicology report, unremarkable in a household this size, though Anand noted carefully which products showed evidence of recent handling inconsistent with their intended household use.
Renata, present during the search, maintained the same unnerving composure she'd displayed at the diner, watching detectives move through her home with an expression Thomas found increasingly difficult to read.

"I've done nothing but care for that child since the day I married her father," she told Anand directly, her voice carrying a specific, wounded indignation. "I don't understand how devoted care has suddenly become a criminal investigation."
"We're simply following the evidence, ma'am," Anand said evenly. "Nothing more, nothing less."
