The Son She Invented

Chapter 06 - The Son She Invented

Adrian did not move.

The boardroom lights hummed above him.

Outside the glass walls, employees pretended not to watch.

Vivian stood near the door with one hand pressed to her throat.

“You are not a Vale,” she repeated.

Adrian laughed.

It was a child’s laugh trapped in a man’s body. Disbelieving. Wounded. Dangerous.

“My father was Charles Vale.”

“Charles raised you.”

“He was my father.”

Vivian looked toward Naomi as if asking another woman to carry the rest.

Naomi refused with her silence.

Vivian continued.

“Before Charles and I married, I was involved with a man named Robert Kane. He worked in the company’s legal department. When I became pregnant, Robert left. Charles knew and married me anyway.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You told me Dad never doubted me.”

“He didn’t.”

“But Grandfather did.”

Vivian closed her eyes.

Vale Meridian’s old succession trust limited certain family-controlled assets to Charles Vale’s biological descendants unless overridden by the Cross trust. Adrian had grown up believing those assets would become his.

If he was not Charles’s biological son, he had never held the inheritance rights Vivian promised him.

But Naomi did.

Through her grandmother’s controlling trust.

Daniel had discovered it.

And worse, he had discovered Vivian had been moving trust property into companies Adrian controlled before anyone could challenge his status.

Adrian sank into a chair.

“You built my whole life around a lie.”

Vivian stepped toward him.

“I built you a life.”

“No. You built yourself protection.”

The words surprised Naomi.

They were true.

Vivian’s face crumpled for half a second before pride restored it.

“Everything I did was for you.”

Adrian looked up.

“Did you kill Daniel for me?”

The boardroom froze.

Vivian said nothing.

That silence would follow her into every room afterward.

Agent Monroe entered through the side door.

“Mrs. Vale, we need you to come with us.”

Vivian straightened.

“Am I under arrest?”

“Not at this time.”

“Then I decline.”

Monroe placed the photograph of Daniel’s brake line on the table.

“We also have a missing mechanic, a falsified towing invoice, and your authorization on a payment made six hours after Mr. Cross died.”

Vivian looked at Naomi.

Not Adrian.

Naomi understood then that Vivian had always seen her as the real opponent.

Not because Naomi was cruel.

Because Naomi could survive without Vivian’s approval.

That kind of woman threatened systems built on permission.

Vivian left with the agents.

Adrian remained in the boardroom after everyone else was asked to clear out.

Naomi stood at the window.

Sloane waited near the door, uncertain whether she was allowed to leave.

Adrian spoke first.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Your grandmother knew.”

“Probably.”

“Daniel knew.”

“Yes.”

“And none of you told me.”

Naomi turned.

“You lied about being with Daniel the night he died. You took my keys. You brought another woman into my home. You tried to remove me from the board. Do not stand there and ask me to comfort you because your mother finally told one truth.”

He flinched.

Sloane looked down.

Adrian’s voice softened.

“I loved you.”

Naomi felt the old reflex. The one that searched his face for the man she married.

Then she remembered her clothes being removed from the west wing, her accounts restricted, her name erased from foundation materials, her marriage reduced to a story Adrian told Sloane.

“Maybe,” Naomi said. “But you loved what I made possible more.”

Marcus entered with another update.

Thomas Bell, the missing mechanic, had been found alive.

He was in a rural hospital in Connecticut after a hit-and-run left him in a ditch.

Before losing consciousness, Thomas had told the paramedic one sentence.

“Check the motorcycle before she rides.”

Naomi looked down at her keys.

May you like

Someone had not only tried to kill Daniel seven years ago.

They had prepared to repeat it with her.
