Lily's Surgery Date

Chapter 09 - Lily's Surgery Date
The days leading up to Lily's surgery moved with a strange, compressed urgency, the household's larger crisis with Eleanor and Victor Pryce running parallel to appointments, pre-surgical bloodwork, and the specific exhausting logistics of preparing a six-year-old for a procedure she was too young to fully understand.
Lily herself remained mostly unaware of the study, the tea, the bruise Claire had covered carefully with makeup for the first few days until it faded on its own.
"Will it hurt," Lily asked, the night before they left for the specialist's hospital three states away, small hand gripping her favorite stuffed rabbit.
"A little, for a little while," Claire said, sitting on the edge of her daughter's bed. "But then your heart's going to work so much better, and you'll feel stronger than you have in a long time."
"Will you be there when I wake up," Lily asked.
"Every single time," Claire said. "I promise."
The deposit, fully restored and wired properly this time through the specialist's preferred channel, cleared without incident three days before the scheduled date, Diane Okafor personally overseeing the transfer to make sure nothing about the process left room for further complication.
Eleanor asked to come to the hospital, a request Claire and Nathan discussed carefully before agreeing, on the condition that Eleanor's own situation with Victor Pryce be fully disclosed to the appropriate authorities before the surgery date, not after.
"I don't want Lily's recovery clouded by an unresolved criminal situation hanging over the family," Claire told Eleanor directly. "If you want to be present for this, the debt situation gets reported properly first. Not quietly managed. Reported."
Eleanor, to her credit, agreed without the resistance Claire half expected, meeting with Okafor and a detective the following day to formally document Victor Pryce's operation, providing dates, amounts, and details that connected cleanly to the ongoing investigation Claire had found in that initial search.
"It's not going to fix what I did," Eleanor told Claire, the evening before they left for the hospital. "But I wanted you to know I'm not trying to manage this quietly anymore. I understand now that quiet management is exactly what got us here in the first place."
"That's a start," Claire said. Not warm, not fully trusting yet, but honest.
The night before surgery, sitting in a hotel room three states from home, Claire lay awake beside Nathan, Lily finally asleep in the adjoining bed after hours of nervous energy.
"Tomorrow's going to be hard," Nathan said quietly. "Regardless of everything else happening around it."
May you like
"I know," Claire said. "But it's the thing that actually matters most right now. Everything else, your mother, Victor Pryce, even us, all of it can wait one more day while we focus entirely on getting her through this."
Nathan reached for her hand in the dark, and this time, for the first time since the study, Claire let him hold it without hesitation, both of them focused entirely on the one thing that mattered more than any of the rest of it tonight.
