Chapter 02 - Watch the Video

Nathan stayed kneeling beside his mother, but his eyes moved to the phone Claire held out, something in her stillness cutting through the anger that had carried him across the room a moment earlier.

Eleanor's crying quieted further, fear now clearly visible under the pain on her face.

Claire pressed play.

The footage showed exactly what had happened moments before Nathan burst through the doors. The open safe. Eleanor's hands moving fast, cash disappearing into the burgundy handbag. The hospital envelope, the bracelet, both visible beside her on the desk. Eleanor noticing the phone, turning, lunging.

Nathan watched his mother's face on the small screen do exactly what her real face had just done seconds ago in front of him, except this time there was no context missing, no assumption to fill in on his mother's behalf.

His expression shifted from anger to confusion, then, slowly, to something closer to horror.

He looked down at the handbag still sitting open on the desk. The same hospital envelope. The same bracelet. The same cash, visible now that he was actually looking instead of assuming.

He turned back to his mother, voice trembling in a way Claire had never heard from him.

"Mom," he said. "You stole Lily's surgery money?"

Eleanor stopped crying instantly.

Her expression didn't shift toward relief or explanation. It shifted toward pure terror, the specific look of someone who understood, all at once, that there was no version of the next sentence that could undo what had just been seen.

Nobody spoke. Claire stood frozen, one hand still against her reddened cheek, watching her husband's entire understanding of his mother collapse in real time.

The chandelier light flickered slightly, some old wiring issue nobody had ever bothered fixing, and in the sudden half-second of dimness, Claire felt the full weight of the last three minutes catch up to her all at once.

*He hit me before he even asked what happened.*

She didn't say it out loud. Not yet. There would be time for that conversation, later, after the immediate crisis of Lily's surgery fund sitting half-stuffed in a stolen handbag got resolved first.

"Give it back," Nathan said to his mother, voice low now, stripped of the earlier fury. "All of it. Right now."

Eleanor's hands shook as she reached into the bag, pulling the cash back out in unsteady bundles, the hospital envelope last, setting it on the desk like it might still burn her the way the tea had.

"I can explain," Eleanor said.

"Explain later," Nathan said. "Right now I need to know if this is all of it, or if there's more somewhere else."

Eleanor's silence, just half a second too long, told Claire everything she needed to know before her mother-in-law said another word.
