Vanessa's Sentencing

Chapter 13 - Vanessa's Sentencing

The sentencing hearing took place eight months after the fall, Vanessa's plea deal, negotiated over several months, resulting in a twelve-year sentence for attempted murder and document fraud combined, a compromise that spared everyone the extended ordeal of a full trial.

Sophie attended the sentencing, her first time seeing Vanessa in person since that final morning coffee in the sunroom nearly a year earlier.

Vanessa looked smaller somehow, dressed in the plain clothes the facility required, none of the polished confidence she'd carried throughout years of running the company's operations division.

When given the opportunity to speak, Vanessa turned toward Sophie directly for the first time in the proceedings.

"I'm sorry," she said. "I know that doesn't undo what I did. I don't expect it to. I wanted you to hear it directly from me, regardless of what happens after today."

Sophie sat with the apology for a long moment before responding, weighing exactly what she needed to say, not for Vanessa's benefit, but for her own sense of closure.

"I believe you're sorry," Sophie said finally. "I don't think that changes what I have to carry forward because of what you did. I still wake up sometimes expecting to hear footsteps that aren't there. I think I'll be carrying some version of that for a long time, regardless of your apology today."

"I understand," Vanessa said quietly.

"I don't say that to be cruel," Sophie continued. "I say it because I think you need to understand the actual weight of what happened, not just the legal consequences you're facing today. This wasn't a business dispute that went wrong. It was a decision to end my life to protect a secret. I need you to sit with the full size of that, not just the twelve years attached to it."

Vanessa nodded, tears falling freely now, and Sophie found, unexpectedly, that watching her former sister-in-law finally absorb the full weight of the harm she'd caused brought a specific kind of peace she hadn't anticipated feeling.

The judge's final remarks, formal and measured, noted the calculated nature of both the document fraud and the attempted murder, the twelve-year sentence reflecting the court's assessment of the danger Vanessa had posed once cornered by the truth.

Sophie left the courthouse that afternoon with Ethan beside her, the specific, complicated relief of watching a chapter close completely, even while understanding some of its effects would linger considerably longer than the legal proceedings themselves.
