The Forensic Confirmation

Chapter 10 - The Forensic Confirmation
Grace Iwu's final report arrived twelve days after the fall, conclusive in a way the preliminary analysis had only suggested.
"The paper stock dates to within the last two years," Grace confirmed, presenting the findings to Ethan, Sophie, and Detective Voss together. "Not eighteen months ago, as the document's stated date claims. Combined with ink composition analysis, I'm confident stating formally that this document was created significantly more recently than its purported date, making it, by definition, fraudulent."
Detective Voss reviewed the report carefully, already anticipating the next steps.
"This, combined with the financial discrepancies and the security footage timeline, gives us sufficient grounds to move forward with formal charges," Voss said. "Document fraud, at minimum. Given the circumstances surrounding the fall, we'll also be pursuing attempted murder charges, pending the DA's final review of the complete evidentiary package."
Sophie felt the weight of twelve days finally shift into something concrete, the specific relief of watching careful, methodical work finally produce a result solid enough to act on.
"What happens next," Ethan asked.
"An arrest warrant, executed within the next few days," Voss said. "I'd recommend arranging alternative housing in the interim, purely as a precaution, though given the strength of this evidence, I expect this to move quickly once we're ready to act."
Sophie and Ethan relocated to a hotel that same evening, a decision that felt both overly cautious and entirely necessary given everything that had happened, Sophie sleeping through her first full night in nearly two weeks without waking at every unfamiliar sound.
The arrest, when it came four days later, happened quietly, without the dramatic confrontation Sophie had half expected after two weeks of building dread. Vanessa was taken into custody at the mansion, charged formally with document fraud, financial misappropriation, and attempted murder, the full weight of eighteen months of careful deception finally collapsing under evidence too solid to argue around.
Ethan learned of the arrest through a call from Detective Voss, standing in the hotel room with Sophie beside him, both of them absorbing the news with a complicated mixture of relief and grief that neither of them had fully anticipated feeling.

"I thought I'd feel triumphant," Ethan said, hanging up the phone. "I mostly just feel sad. My own sister tried to kill my wife, and somehow the overwhelming feeling right now is just grief for what our family used to be before any of this started."
"Both things can be true," Sophie said. "Relief that it's over, and grief for what it cost to get here. I don't think you have to choose just one."
