Vanessa's Counterattack

Chapter 07 - Vanessa's Counterattack
Vanessa, informed of her removal from the foundation's board, responded with a considerably more aggressive strategy than Julian had anticipated, retaining a prominent defense attorney and launching a public relations campaign designed to reframe the entire situation.
A carefully sourced story appeared in a regional business publication within days, suggesting Eleanor Ashcroft's accusations stemmed from "documented cognitive decline," questioning whether an eighty-two-year-old founder's judgment should be trusted over a respected board member's reputation.
"She's trying to make this about my mother's competency," Julian said, reading the article with barely controlled fury, "instead of about her own fabricated contracts."
"That's a common strategy in cases like this," Corinne said. "Attack the credibility of the accuser before the evidence itself gets fully scrutinized. I want to be direct with you both, this article is going to generate real questions among some of our donors, regardless of how unfounded the premise actually is."
Eleanor, reading the article herself, felt a specific, old fear resurface, the particular vulnerability of an elderly woman watching her own credibility questioned in a way she'd worked her entire adult life to avoid needing to prove.
She sat alone with the newspaper for a long while after Julian left the room, thinking about every meeting over the past three decades where she'd had to work twice as hard as any man in the room to be taken seriously, every board vote where her judgment had quietly been second-guessed before eventually being proven right. She had believed, foolishly perhaps, that thirty-one years of results might have finally settled that particular battle. Reading the article, she understood it never fully settles. It just goes quiet for a while.
"I know my own mind," she said quietly. "I built this foundation from nothing. I know exactly what I found in those records."
"I believe you completely," Julian said. "We need considerably more than my belief, though, to counter what she's building in the press."
Priya's forensic investigation, continuing steadily despite Vanessa's public counterattack, uncovered additional evidence over the following weeks that considerably strengthened the case against her, financial records showing similar consulting arrangements at two other charitable organizations where Vanessa had served on the board, both showing the same pattern of unexplained payments with no documented deliverables.
"This isn't an isolated incident," Priya told Julian, presenting the expanded findings. "This appears to be a sustained pattern across multiple organizations, spanning at least six years."
Julian brought this evidence to a specialized financial crimes attorney, a careful woman named Farrah Nasser who had built her practice around exactly this kind of nonprofit fraud case.
"I want to pursue this formally," Julian told her. "Not just removing her from our board, but holding her fully accountable for what she's actually done, here and apparently elsewhere."
"I'll need considerable documentation from the other organizations as well," Farrah said. "If this pattern is as extensive as your accountant suggests, we may be looking at a case involving considerably more victims than just your foundation."

Julian thought of Maya's father, of Eleanor's trembling hands in that wheelchair, of however many other organizations and families Vanessa Kessler's pattern of calculated exploitation had likely touched over the years.
"Find them all," he said. "Every single organization. I don't want her simply removed from one board while she continues this exact pattern elsewhere."
