Eleanor's Discovery

Chapter 03 - Eleanor's Discovery
Julian moved the small group into the foundation's private office just off the ballroom, the gala continuing behind them under the careful management of the event coordinator, guests slowly returning to their conversations despite the considerable gossip already spreading through the crowd.
"I want to understand exactly what you found," Julian told his mother, settling into the chair beside her wheelchair. "From the beginning, please."
Eleanor reached into the small bag attached to her wheelchair's armrest and produced several folded printouts, the specific, careful preparation of a woman who had clearly anticipated needing to defend her claim.
"I've been reviewing the foundation's donor ledger for the past month," she said. "As founder, I still receive quarterly reports, even though Julian handles the daily operations now. I noticed transfers to an account labeled only as Kessler Development Consulting, totaling nearly three hundred thousand dollars over the past year."
Vanessa, present in the room at Julian's insistence, crossed her arms defensively. "That's a legitimate consulting arrangement. I've provided considerable strategic guidance to this foundation's real estate holdings."
"Show me the contract," Julian said.
Vanessa hesitated, just long enough for Maya, still standing quietly near the door where Julian had asked her to remain as a witness, to notice the specific flicker of uncertainty cross the wealthy woman's face.
"I'll have my assistant forward the documentation," Vanessa said finally. "This is hardly the appropriate setting for a full financial review."
"My mother nearly got struck across the face in the middle of my own gala over this exact question," Julian said, voice hardening. "I think this is precisely the appropriate setting."
Eleanor continued, unfolding another printout. "There's something else. The consulting payments began exactly six months after Vanessa joined this foundation's board. Before that, our real estate portfolio was managed entirely in-house, at considerably lower cost, by staff we already employed."
"Are you suggesting I manufactured a need for my own services," Vanessa said, voice rising again.
"I'm suggesting the timeline deserves scrutiny," Eleanor said, calm despite her trembling hands. "I've built this foundation over thirty-one years, Vanessa. I know exactly what legitimate growth looks like, and this isn't it."
Julian sat back, absorbing the weight of what his mother had uncovered, understanding that whatever had nearly happened in that ballroom tonight was considerably more significant than a single moment of lost temper.
He felt something twist in his chest, a specific, unwelcome guilt at how easily he'd handed Vanessa a board seat two years earlier based on nothing more than her polished reputation and a handful of glowing introductions from mutual acquaintances. He'd trusted his own judgment of her completely, and sitting here now, watching his mother's hands still trembling from nearly being struck, he understood exactly how costly that misplaced trust might have already become.
"I want a full independent audit," he said. "Starting tomorrow morning. Every transaction connected to Kessler Development Consulting, reviewed by someone with no connection to either of you."
Vanessa's composure cracked slightly at that, the specific tell of someone calculating rapidly how much an independent review might actually reveal.

"That seems considerably excessive," she said, "for a misunderstanding that could be resolved with proper documentation."
"Then the documentation will resolve it," Julian said. "I look forward to seeing it."
