Audrey's Understanding

Chapter 13 - Audrey's Understanding

Audrey's first wedding anniversary arrived quietly, a considerably more modest celebration than the lavish original event, just her husband, Claire, Margaret, and Rosa gathered for a small dinner at the mansion.

"I think about that night constantly," Audrey admitted, during the dinner. "Watching Dad try to force Grandma's hand, and then watching you step forward like you'd been preparing for exactly that moment your whole life."

"I had been," Claire said honestly. "Three years of preparation, specifically for the possibility that I'd need to physically intervene rather than simply file paperwork from a distance."

"I'm glad you chose to be there in person," Audrey said. "Documents can be contested. What you did that night, in front of two hundred witnesses, can't be rewritten or denied."

Margaret raised her glass, something warm and settled crossing her face. "To the family Edward always wanted us to become, however painfully we had to get here."

The toast landed quietly, meaningfully, among five people who had each navigated their own difficult path to this particular table, none of them taking for granted the specific, hard-won peace of simply sitting together in a room that had once nearly been stolen out from under all of them.

Claire thought of her adoptive parents, who had known about her origins since the beginning and had raised her with exactly the kind of steady, honest character that had ultimately carried her through the most frightening moment of her life. She planned to visit them the following weekend, understanding that whatever new family she'd gained, the one who had actually raised her deserved her gratitude first and always.

"I want you to know something," she told Margaret, as the evening wound down. "Whatever happens with the estate going forward, I don't intend to take anything from this family that isn't mine to claim. I'm here because my father wanted me protected, not because I want to replace Victor or take anything beyond what was specifically provided for in the will."

"I know that," Margaret said, squeezing her hand. "I think that's precisely what makes you so different from him. You don't want power. You want justice. Those two things look similar from a distance, but they're actually nothing alike."
