A year after the wedding, Claire had relocated permanently to the city where the Thornton estate was located, taking up residence in the mansion alongside Margaret, the two women settling into a domestic rhythm that felt, to both of them, considerably more natural than either had expected.
Claire had left her previous work to take on formal management of the family's remaining assets, a role she approached with the specific, careful diligence of someone who understood exactly how much damage careless oversight could cause.
"I want complete transparency built into everything," she told the estate's newly retained financial advisor. "No single person should ever again have unchecked authority over these accounts. Every transaction reviewed, every quarter audited independently."
Rosa visited monthly, having built a genuine, growing relationship with both Claire and Margaret, the three women navigating a complicated, unique family structure that none of them had ever imagined would actually exist in their lives.
"I keep thinking about how different things would have been if Edward had simply told the truth from the beginning," Rosa said, during one such visit. "If he'd acknowledged you publicly, raised you alongside Victor, given this family the chance to actually know each other properly."
"I think he was afraid of exactly what Victor eventually became," Claire said. "A man willing to steal from his own mother to protect his sense of entitlement to something he believed was exclusively his. I think Edward saw that potential in Victor early, and it frightened him enough to choose secrecy over honesty, hoping distance would somehow protect me from it."

"It did protect you, in a way," Margaret said gently. "You grew up without any of this pressure. You became the person you actually are, without the specific, distorting influence of knowing, from childhood, that you were heir to a considerable fortune. I think that's precisely what Edward was trying to give you."
Claire considered that assessment, understanding the specific, complicated love underneath it, a father who had protected his daughter by hiding her, a mother who had accepted that hiding as the kindest available option, and a family that had ultimately, if painfully, found its way back together despite decades of deliberate, carefully maintained distance.
