Mark Visits His Mother

Chapter 09 - Mark Visits His Mother
Mark flew home the following weekend, needing to see his mother in person, needing to sit across from her and tell her everything that had happened, in a way a phone call simply couldn't hold.
Sarah opened the door and pulled him into an embrace that lasted considerably longer than either of them usually allowed, understanding, without needing to be told, that whatever had happened since his last call had been significant enough to bring him home.
"Tell me," she said, once they were settled at the kitchen table, the same small table where she'd raised him alone for ten years.
He told her everything, Richard's office, the letter from Constance, Greg Ashworth's arrest, the full, devastating shape of the conspiracy that had destroyed their family before Mark had been old enough to understand any of it.
Sarah listened in silence, tears falling steadily, and when Mark finished, she sat with the full weight of it for a long while before speaking.
"I spent ten years believing your father simply chose his mother over me," she said quietly. "I built an entire understanding of our marriage around that belief. Learning now that he didn't choose her, that he was manipulated as deliberately as I was, changes something I thought was permanently settled in my own heart."
"Would you talk to him," Mark asked. "If he asked."
Sarah considered the question carefully. "I don't know yet. I think I need time to actually process what's changed before I make any decisions about what happens next between us."
"He seems genuinely sorry," Mark said. "I know that doesn't erase ten years. I just want you to know he's not the same person who let you leave without fighting for you. I think he's spent a very long time regretting exactly that."
Sarah reached for her son's hand, feeling a specific, complicated gratitude toward a boy who had somehow, through a single afternoon in a watch store, set into motion the unraveling of an entire decade of carefully maintained deception.
"I'm proud of you," she said. "For how you handled that moment in the store. For not fighting back, not stooping to that boy's level, for simply being yourself."

"I didn't even know who I actually was," Mark admitted, laughing slightly despite the weight of the conversation. "Turns out I'm a watch empire heir who's been living in a two-bedroom apartment his whole life."
"You're considerably more than that," Sarah said firmly. "You're the boy I raised to measure people by their character, not their clothing or their family's name. That's worth more than any empire, Mark, and I don't ever want you to forget it."
