Elise's Room

Chapter 14 - Elise's Room

Harrison and Chloe finally cleared out Elise's old room together, two years after her death and one year after the trial's conclusion, the specific timing feeling right to both of them in a way neither could fully explain except that the grief finally felt ready to be honored rather than simply avoided.

They kept the jewelry box, the one Chloe had once searched through so nervously, and framed several of Elise's favorite photographs for Chloe's own bedroom instead, a deliberate, careful way of keeping her mother present without keeping an entire untouched room as a shrine to a grief neither of them needed to carry quite so heavily anymore.

"I want to keep the locket too," Chloe said, holding the small, tarnished silver piece that had started everything. "Not hidden this time. I want it somewhere I can see it."

Harrison found a small display case for it, placing it on Chloe's dresser alongside her ballet trophies, the old photograph of Elise and Meredith still inside, a specific, permanent reminder of exactly how the truth had finally found its way to the surface.

"Doesn't it feel strange," Harrison asked, "keeping a photograph of the woman who hurt your mother, displayed openly like that."

"It's not about her," Chloe said, with the specific, careful wisdom she'd developed considerably more of over the preceding two years. "It's about what I did when I found it. I want to remember that I was brave, even though I was scared."

Harrison felt his chest tighten with pride, understanding his daughter had arrived, entirely on her own, at exactly the lesson he'd spent considerable time trying to help her fully absorb.

"I think that's a beautiful way to think about it," he said.

They spent the rest of that afternoon going through Elise's old belongings together, laughing at old photographs, crying at others, the specific, complicated work of grief finally allowed to unfold naturally, without the fear and secrecy that had once made it so much harder to navigate honestly.

"I miss her," Chloe said, near the end of the afternoon.

"I miss her too," Harrison said. "Every single day. I think that's allowed to keep being true, even while we're also building something good, together, going forward."
