Chapter 02 - Then Explain This

Nathan's own supervisor arrived within minutes, alerted by the noise, and behind him came two more foremen, a small crowd gathering fast around the wreckage and the two men facing off in front of it.

Victor recovered his composure faster than Nathan expected, snatching for a version of control that had clearly served him well in a hundred previous crises.

"That video's been manipulated," Victor said, voice tight but steadying. "I don't know what you're trying to pull, but I built this company from nothing, and I'm not going to let a laborer destroy my reputation with some doctored footage."

"It's not doctored," Nathan said. "I caught it on my phone completely by accident, filming footage of the site for a safety complaint I was planning to file. I didn't even realize what I had until I reviewed it just now."

The crowd murmured, several workers pulling out their own phones, and Nathan understood, watching Victor's eyes dart across the gathering faces, that his employer was rapidly losing whatever narrative he'd hoped to control.

"I want this reported," Frank said, still shaking from the near miss, voice steadier than Nathan expected given what he'd just survived. "Formally. To OSHA, to the police, whoever needs to see it."

"You'll lose your job," Victor said, turning on him sharply. "Both of you. I own this site."

"You don't own the truth," Nathan said. "And right now, I think a judge is going to be considerably more interested in that footage than in whatever threat you're trying to make."

Victor's face had gone through several colors in the past two minutes, red with fury, then pale with fear, and now something in between, calculating and cornered all at once.

"This is a misunderstanding," he said, quieter now, clearly recalibrating in real time. "I was checking that bolt for wear. I wasn't removing it."

"The video shows you removing it," Nathan said. "Not checking it. There's a difference, and I think everyone standing here just watched the difference happen with their own eyes."

Frank's supervisor called the site's safety officer immediately, and within the hour, local police had arrived alongside an OSHA field investigator, a careful, no-nonsense woman named Sarah Whitcombe who began collecting statements methodically before anyone had a chance to compare notes further.

"I need that phone," she told Nathan directly. "As evidence. I'll need you to come in for a formal statement as well."

Nathan handed the phone over without hesitation, watching Victor across the site, still protesting to anyone who'd listen, his composure cracking further with every passing minute.

Something about the specific, calculated way Victor had removed that bolt kept circling back through Nathan's mind, though. Not desperation. Not an accident. A deliberate choice, made in advance, aimed at someone specific.

He looked at Frank, quiet and shaken nearby, and felt a specific, growing unease that this hadn't simply been random cruelty or cost-cutting recklessness.

It had felt, somehow, personal.
