Both

## Chapter 11: Both
The DNA results came back on a Tuesday.
Priya called Elena at her clinic, which had reopened after the Board of Medicine suspended its review pending the criminal case. The complaint from Marcus now looked like what it was: retaliation.
"It's a match," Priya said. "99.98 percent probability. Sophie Kincaid is Lily Voss."
Elena was in exam room two. She was between patients. The room smelled like hand sanitizer and the purple lollipops she kept in a jar on the counter. She sat on the rolling stool and pressed her phone against her ear and didn't say anything for a while.
"Elena?"
"I'm here."
"We need to discuss next steps. The custody situation is complicated. Legally, you're the biological mother. Nora has been the de facto parent for six years. In Virginia, that creates a competing claim. The court will prioritize the child's wellbeing and stability."
"I know what the court will prioritize."
"What do you want?"
Elena looked at the jar of lollipops. Purple ones. Sophie's favorite color was purple. Nora had mentioned that, casually, during one of their conversations. Purple and yellow. That's why she wore the yellow raincoat.
"I want to see Nora," Elena said.
She drove to Forest Hill after work. Sophie was at a friend's house for a playdate. The apartment was quiet in a way it probably never was when Sophie was home.
Nora made coffee. Real coffee, not the paper-cup kind. She moved around her small kitchen with the efficiency of someone who'd arranged the space around a child: everything breakable on the top shelf, everything important at counter height, drawings covering every available surface on the fridge.
They sat at the kitchen table. The same table where Sophie drew Mr. Hops with rocket shoes.
"The DNA confirmed it," Elena said.
Nora nodded. She already knew. She'd been expecting it the way you expect a storm you can see on the horizon.
"I've been thinking about this for three weeks," Elena said. "And I need to tell you what I've decided. Not what a lawyer told me to decide. What I decided."
Nora wrapped her hands around her coffee mug. Waiting.
"Sophie has a mother. She has had a mother for six years. That mother taught her to brush her teeth and tie her shoes and made her laugh when she was scared. That mother bandaged her knees and read her stories and sat up with her when she had a fever. That mother is you."
Nora's eyes filled. She didn't blink.
"And Sophie has another mother. One she doesn't remember with her mind but remembers with something else, something I don't have a medical term for. One who held her in a hospital room at 2:47 in the morning and counted her fingers and traced the birthmark behind her ear. That mother is me."
Elena put both hands on the table. Flat. Steady.
"I'm not here to take her. I'm here to ask if there's room for both of us."
Nora made a sound. Not a word. Just breath leaving her body in a way that sounded like six years of fear being released.
"I spoke with Priya about filing a joint custody arrangement. Not adversarial. Cooperative. You remain her primary parent. Her home stays her home. Her school, her friends, her routine, none of that changes. I come in gradually. First as Dr. Voss. Then as Elena. Then, someday, when she's ready and only when she's ready, as something more."
"You'd do that?"
"She needs both of us. Taking her from you would be doing what Marcus did. It would be treating her like property. She's not property. She's a person who loves you."
Nora put her coffee down. Pressed her hands over her face. Her shoulders shook. Elena reached across the table and put her hand on Nora's wrist. Not holding. Just touching. Just being there.
When Nora looked up, her face was red and wet and open.
"She keeps asking about you," Nora said. "Every day. When is Dr. Voss coming back. Can Dr. Voss come to dinner. Can Dr. Voss see my new drawing." She laughed, watery. "She drew you again yesterday. The dream lady. But this time she drew two women. Side by side. Both smiling."
Elena's throat tightened. She swallowed past it.
"There's something else," Elena said. "I need to show you something."
She reached into her bag and pulled out Mr. Hops. Nora had given permission for Elena to take him for one afternoon, to bring to the evidence meeting with Priya. Something about documenting the chain of provenance.
"The long ear," Elena said. "Feel it."
Nora took the rabbit. Squeezed the longer ear. Her expression changed.
"There's something inside."
"I noticed when I was holding him at Priya's office. There's a small lump in the stitching, near the base."
Nora carefully pulled at the seam. Old thread, loosened by years of a child's grip. It came apart easily. Inside, folded small enough to fit in a rabbit's ear, was a piece of paper. Yellowed. Soft.
Nora unfolded it. Handed it to Elena.
Elena's handwriting. Messy, exhausted, written in a hospital bed at 3 AM, probably with one hand while holding a newborn with the other:
Lily — you are one hour old and you are already the bravest thing I've ever seen. Whatever happens in this big strange world, remember: you were wanted. From the very first second. You were wanted.
Elena read it three times. Then she folded it carefully and put it back in Mr. Hops's ear.
"She should find that herself," Elena said. "When she's older. When she's ready. When the story makes sense."
May you like
Nora nodded. Stitched the ear closed with a needle from her sewing kit. Small, careful stitches. The kind of stitches a mother makes when she's repairing something that matters.
Keep reading Part 12 — the final chapter. Because Sophie's birthday is coming, and for the first time, both of her mothers will be there.
