Melissa lowered the poker only after Ruth recognized Samuel.
Even then, neither woman welcomed them.
Ruth Gardner had hidden Melissa for three years.
Grant brought Melissa to the signature room after the Lake Avery meeting. He demanded the stolen ledgers and threatened to frame Vanessa for murder.
Melissa escaped through a service elevator during a fire alarm.
Ruth helped her disappear.
“Why not go to the police?” Evelyn asked.
Melissa gave a tired smile.
“Grant owned the evidence. Samuel owned the company. Vanessa was drugged. Agnes was compromised. You were signing documents you didn’t understand.”
“I didn’t sign them.”
“I know that now.”
At the time, Melissa believed the entire Rowan family was involved.
She trusted only Ruth.
The wedding ring belonged to Eleanor because Ruth had kept more than records.
She kept Eleanor’s final letter.
The envelope was addressed to Evelyn.
Samuel left the room before she opened it.
My dearest girl,
If you are reading this, then I failed to tell you something while I still had time.
Power is most dangerous when it insists it is love.
Your father loves you, but he believes love gives him the right to arrange your life. Grant says he admires you, but I fear he admires what standing beside you will give him.
Do not marry to save a company.
Do not stay to save a reputation.
And never confuse endurance with loyalty.
Evelyn had to stop twice before finishing.
Her mother had written the letter the day before her death.
Grant’s father intercepted it when Eleanor sent it through company mail. Ruth recovered it years later from archived legal files.
“Did Grant know about this?” Evelyn asked.
Melissa nodded.
“He used it to provoke Samuel.”
Miriam arranged for Melissa and Ruth to testify remotely at the board meeting.
The state attorney general reopened the financial case.
Grant’s position weakened.
Then Dr. Leonard Halpern gave a sworn interview.
He confirmed every psychiatric record bearing Evelyn’s name.
He claimed he treated her privately for three years.
Grant’s attorneys submitted appointment calendars, billing statements, and handwritten notes.
The records were detailed.
Too detailed.
Evelyn read one entry dated April 14.
Patient expressed resentment toward adult daughter and fear of abandonment.
On April 14, Evelyn had been in Montreal with Callie for her college graduation trip.
They had photographs, hotel records, and border records.
Miriam found six more impossible appointments.
Halpern had lied under oath.
The doctor was arrested before the board meeting began.
Grant denied knowing the records were false.
His six directors began receiving anonymous messages.
Each message contained evidence of a different private indiscretion: affairs, tax problems, undisclosed investments, addiction treatment.
Grant had blackmailed his own board.
One director resigned.
Another entered the hospital with chest pain.
The meeting was delayed two hours.
When it finally began, Evelyn sat at the long walnut table where she once watched her father conduct business.
Grant sat opposite her.
Callie and Miriam remained behind.
Samuel chose not to attend.
“I should not sit in that room as though my mistakes are equal to your authority,” he told Evelyn.
It was the first time he had stepped back without being forced.
Grant presented first.
He spoke about stability, legacy, and emotional manipulation by an aging founder.
Then Evelyn presented the ledger.
Margaret Ellis appeared by video.
So did three other women declared dead on company documents.
Melissa waited in a secure room for her turn.
Before she could testify, the building alarm sounded.
Not fire.
Security breach.
The video feed cut out.
Miriam’s phone rang.
She listened for less than ten seconds.
Then she looked at Evelyn.
“Melissa’s transport was intercepted.”
“By whom?”
Miriam turned toward Grant.

“Someone wearing a Rowan security uniform.”
